Well done Neville, you must be very proud, you've done a first class job. It sounds to be running ok no bad missing etc so is it jusr fine tuning and mixture to sort out? And that looks to be a good size workshop you have there, I'd soon have that filled Laughing Laughing Laughing

most of the literature i have read says that the Petter A1 was fitted with a zenith carb, mine came with a solex fitted which looked original..........

my first engine - Page 5 P1250312

so when i saw a very good example of the correct zenith for sale on eBay at a reasonable price i bought one for it........................

my first engine - Page 5 P1270143

a sharp eyed look at the mounting flanges reveals they are at 90 degrees to each other Shocked Shocked

a closer look at the inlet manifold shows 4 lobes for carb mounting .............

my first engine - Page 5 P1250597

i now believe that Petter bought a batch of which ever carb was available at the time and drilled the inlet manifolds to suit which ever carb they could get at the time.

so the solex will go back on the engine and the zenith in the spare bits box Shocked

as they say ............win some lose some Rolling Eyes

the one i bought was off a Petter A1, if you look at the inlet flange in the last image you can see where it would be mounted if the studs were drilled 90 degrees further round.

my point is the books are wrong...................both types of carbs were originally fitted to the same engines.

iv'e seen lots of A1's with solex carbs fitted ...............my mistake was not noticing the mountings were different Laughing

the solex is ok ...............i just wanted to fit the right one so it was original..........my guess now is the solex is the original.........so i'll just put it back on and use the other zenith one on something else.......i may have another old Petter coming soon anyway. Smile

no, its still for sale, a local car place are trying to sell it for me on a commission basis so at least i don't have to store it until it sells.................the second hand market is always slow this time of year.

Neville glad to see your still tinkering about, it's like you say the manufacturers would fit what they could get there hands on at the time or at a better price, I don't think anyone can complain after such a great job you've done in restoring this engine, a real credit to you, WELL DONE for your first attempt.

Good luck with the sale of your car, if petrol prices go up it will help as people down size but still want a a car with a few extras.

Neville what about this, the fitting (I think) looks right but you need to check linkages etc to see if it's the correct type.

Stu thats the same as the one i bought, 90 degrees out on the connecting flange

it now seems mine should have a solex from new so i'll put that back on as there's nothing wrong with it anyway.

Stu you are looking at the wrong one, the one marked 26-FV is the solex that fits and is 90 deg to the intake

the one i bought is the same as your link both are inline with the intake and don't fit.

i'm happy with the solex now i know its original Very Happy

Thanks Mike i'm really proud of the way my first engine turned out ..................the guys in the workshop believe we can do almost anything ................I'm the youngest permanent member at the age of 60.. we have a contract blacksmith and a contract sign-writer , my older brother is a coded welder............... the "boss" is a 70 year old retired wheel-wright ..........Jim is a general craftsman ......aged 76 ...........me ? i used to be an engineer recently into radiological protection at a nuclear power station, medically unfit to work .................due to spinal injuries to my neck

we operate under the name of the geriatric creche which suits our needs to avoid watching daytime tv
and provides us with an interest beyond the simple needs of passing the time waiting for ..............what some would have us believe would be a better life

Neville
