Head Gaskets Again
i finailly got hold of the chap who everyones been recommening today, i have just been quoted £40 , that seems alot to me, what do you all think
Just got hold of another company called RAM
there near me, willing to make head gasket, but dont use copper , they use graphite, will this affect the engine, or should it be ok
Re: Head Gaskets Again
There is no real need for copper head gaskets these days. Of course copper is often the traditional material, so if you want to be historically correct that's the one to go for. But there are modern materials out there, one of which is called Klingersil, which make perfectly good head gaskets. I got a couple of head gaskets for Lister Ds made out of this stuff for a fiver each from a rally last summer. I just wish I'd got a business card fromthe people selling them as gaskets for a D are double that everywhere else. I've fitted one of these modern gaskets to a rebuilt engine and it's running fine.

Can they take the heat though
i said to the lad who i had the wolseley off about it, he said as the engine runs at 950rpm it gets so hot, the copper is good for that, if this ever stuff can take it ill go for that,
Re: Head Gaskets Again
Ryan, as Ive said before....Make your own, I do and no probs as yet.
You just have to purchase the right material.
We'll have a chat tomorrow about it.
cheers

Re: Head Gaskets Again
Klingersil will deffinitely take the heat as they use it to make gaskets on high pressure steam pipelines. Steam engine people use it to make gaskets for their steamers too.
I've given the Lister D with one of these gaskets a good shake down now, had it running for hours, and there have been no problems.

Re: Head Gaskets Again
I make all my own head gasket out of a material called 'manifoldite'. It consists of two layers of an asbestos like material with a sheet of metal in between. For ignitor gaskets I have been using rubber o-rings for years with no trouble.
Re: Head Gaskets Again
i'm going to jump in on this thread because i too need a head gasket, for the Ruston VSH, trouble is, because its a diesel, the bump clearances need to be maintained, so i cant put a thicker gasket on, thus ruling outn klingersil, as the current gasket is just sheet copper, so i need to get another copper gasket, as this ones blown on the cooling side.
