Ideally you need some descent gasket paper Ryan, brown paper is too thin for those applications. I get gasket material locally, I would THINK that bearing specialists, motor factors etc should stock it. Cereal packet would do at a push but I prefer the proper material. Hylomar is my favourite "goo" for sealing as it is easily removed should the need arise (and it usually does)!

Don't forget cork comes in different thickneses, so you'll have to see which you need.

a quick check to see what sort of thickness you need is to check the variations in level of the material you intend to seal, put a straight edge over the workpiece, and see how much distortion you have, and use thicker or thinner gasket paper accordingly.
