Initial advice for a Lister Domestic Water Pump Empty Initial advice for a Lister Domestic Water Pump

Post by Moseley Sun Oct 20 2019, 16:01

Afternoon All,

I am another newbie having just acquired a lister D which is now running. I've also acquired a Lister Domestic water pump. it was purchased unseen and appears to turn freely and looks to be in reasonable condition. It's my intention to rebuild it but before I do I would like to see if it runs and functions as it should in its current condition.

My questions are as follows-

I have the 2 diagrams referred to in an earlier post but can't find any other literature about the running , servicing and maintenance of these pumps. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

How full should the oil chamber be?

If the Lister D runs between 500 - 1000rpm what size pulley wheel do I need to fit to run the pump so that it operates within it's correct rpm range?

I assume there is a sequence to prime the pump before use - any advice would be helpful.

Any other hints and tips would be appreciated

Many Thanks

Moseley

Hello and welcome to the forum!

There is an article in this month's (November issue) 'Stationary Engine' magazine comparing the Lister and Argosy pumps which gives the standard size pulley as 8 1/2 inches diameter and the pump speed as 500 rpm.

Many thanks Matt I'll try and get a copy.
Now I know the advised rpm for the pump I can calculate the diameter of the drive pulley

SEP have just taken over from Farm Feeds for domestic parts.

I assume you are running it of a Lister D? If that's the case then a 6" pulley on the D will be close enough to the speed you need, it's not rocket science, these pumps will cope with a little variation on speed, I've even known them to pump just by spinning the pulley by hand.

For demonstration purposes you dont need to hit the recommended rpm for the pump, you only need it to pump water, which it will do as said above, when spun by hand, you can go as slow as you like.
