Enfield Marine Diesel Engine and Reversing Gearbox.
Hi,
This is my first post as a member from Namibia.
This Enfield marine diesel engine 86 Mark IIIA and Enfield Matrix marine reversing gearbox followed me home in 2015. I spent some time cleaning and preserving her for storage, as I don't have much time on my hands to get her running again soon. Nevertheless, she is now stored in my container in the back yard, waiting for me. Some of the bits are missing, but that does not worry me, as I'm sure that I will be able to cobble something together. (Hand start crank, one air intake oil bath air filter with branch piece and the starter motor.) I do have the engine overhaul and spare parts manual, with courtesy of the guys at the stationary engine forum.
The first time I came across one of these engines was in a cutter of the South African Navy, where I once worked. These engines were notoriously bad starters and could quite easily put 3 stokers on their backs, before the thing was running, even on a warm day. No starter motor was fitted on the engines in the S.A. Navy engine driven cutters, as far as I am aware.
Of interest is that this engine has an alternator winding attached to the gearbox flange, so some thought went into the design of these engines. I have not found much on the internet, so far, but those people who have them fitted into launches or long boats love the sound they make when running.
I do hope that my photos are hosted, as I don't see them when I preview.
Geoffrey.
