Just had another look the plate appears to be brass it's got that old brass look.
were the number is stamped on there is not enough room for a 1 to fit.
543560 is what's stamped on the plate. Just wondering how are the magneto's fitted on 1962 engine mine does not have the spacer plate between magneto + engine.
My engine above. This pic was taken on me phone so not that clever.
Many thanks for having a look Blackvanman.
Many Many Thanks

Now that, in my book, is a crime which should be punishable by firing squad. No one who loves (or even likes) their engines should ever dream of doing such a thing. (although I've seen it done with everything from Mk10 Villiers engines, rotting in fields, to freshly rebuilt motorbike engines from so called professionals! ).

That happened to me once with a Petter A1. When I fired it up (without realising) the damn thing raced off down the garden! The governor was trying to close the throttle, but was instead opening it.
I think I pulled the plug lead in the end, or it probably would've gone into self destruct.
Seems it's an easy thing to do on these then (I didn't do it, like yours mine was done by a previous owner).

Re: Yet another Petter A1 !!
When i leave an engine i try to get the piston on compression stroke take out plug squirt some oil put plug back in
so nothing can into the cylinder + both valve's are closed.
Update
What are the big end bearings made from ??
It looks like the shell's are a fraction to big so if i take a little bit off each shell then it should be good no more play.
Well that's what i hope
Now this is where i get told off from some one
Many Thank's
Andrew

Re: Yet another Petter A1 !!
If they are Babbit (American term I believe) type white metal shells then they generally go through a process called "Scraping", where they are re-shaped. The trouble is, if you just take a bit off they will no longer be round when the big end goes back together. The "scraping" process removes material in the correct way, then the space between the con rod & the big end bearing shell case is re-shimmed to suit.
Something like that anyway.

Re: Yet another Petter A1 !!
Hi Nutgone Thank's for the reply.
I do see what you mean when getting scraped + shimmed. I have the conrod + bearing's out going to try a few thing's and let's see what happen's that's all i can do at the moment.
Many Thank's
Andrew
Update
Found out where the wear is it's on the crank. Conrod + bearing's are fine.
One little adjustment should have it sorted
Once that's done next is carb clean

Re: Yet another Petter A1 !!
Andrew, I've been watching that, it was up for sale last week and it didn't get any bids at £30, and there's a few guys in that area always on the look out for something to break for spares so they might have looked at it and decided against it being any good. If my van hadn't just given up the ghost I maybe could of helped some way to help with the pick it up. If there's no bids on it this time I might offer him £20 scrap for it.

Re: Yet another Petter A1 !!
Andrew if you want it bid away and I won't bid, I do have one or two Petter A1's so it's not something I want or need but I wouldn't like to see it going for scrap, then I'd see about buying it.

Re: Yet another Petter A1 !!
Andrew ebay can be sneaky on what you type in, I've tried it a few different ways and I find the way I do it now is the best. (I'm not just checking for Petters) I do all SE. I always have a SE in my watching, I click to open it then at the top of the displayed screen I click on stationary engines and I find that gets the most pages to open up.

Re: Yet another Petter A1 !!
You can also try searching for particular engine makes or types, as they can end up in funny places.

Good luck with the bidding Andrew and I hope you win, but don't go to high as these engines don't comand a high price.

Re: Yet another Petter A1 !!
Ok Andrew bid away, did you ask your Father-in-law about picking up the one at Crook if you don't win the Ripon engine or your going to surprise him by not going to Ripon. Just tell him to turn right when you get to the A1

Re: Yet another Petter A1 !!
Hi All
Another Update
I have checked to condition of this Petter A1 it is alot better no big end play that i can see + the bore has a very small step though might be carbon. The piston has a wobble but not as much as the other
So i will changing a few bit's over for now to get it running.
I am a little puzzled by this on the serial no start's with 52 even older then the first one
Then the magneto has the spacer plate as well. The carb is a zenith one my first zenith on a petter a1
Part's i am changing to get it running are carb+manifold+exhaust and the side plate so i crank to start it.
And it's got no decompressor lever !!
The cowling need's some attention rubbing on top of flywheel.
At the moment it's getting the oily rag treatment.
Sorry no pic's yet.
Many Thanks
Andrew

Re: Yet another Petter A1 !!
Andrew great news you won the engine and made quick work of picking it up. Looking forward to seeing some pics.
There's not many petrol engines with decompressors fitted these are mainly fitted to diesels where the compression is a lot higher.
