Yeah, quite a few of these Petter A1's have de-compressor levers, but they're not really needed. Sidevalve engines never had much compression when new (hence why you never see sidevalve diesels). So long as it's wound backwards to compression before starting, that way, by the time you hit compression the flywheel should have enough inertia to get over. Also, with an impulse magneto the spark is retarded to TDC, they're never likely to kick back.

Any way made good progress last night a few more hour's should see it run hopefully Very Happy Very Happy
Cowling rubbing on flywheel now done. Cleaned the magneto, cleaned all air fins + bent petrol pipe to suit my carb.
What should the point's be set at. What's left to do is change the oil. make gasket for the carb. Get timing done, Put exhaust pipe. connect petrol pipe. Put petrol in swing and hope for the best Laughing Laughing

Hi All
Another Update.
Got the petter from ripon running and not good something is banging hard you can hear it over the exhaust Mad
I have checked everything and seem's to be ok except the piston wobbling a bit could it be piston slap.
It happen's the same time as combustion. So i might be looking at a piston+rebore.
She start's easy enough though. I will try and get a video of it running so you can hear it Crying or Very sad

Check the up & down fit of the rings in the grooves. My Scott PAB makes quite a mechanical noise when running, I thought it was the timing chain (actually, the timing chain is probably still responsible for some of it) but when I put another piston ring in, which was a poor fit in the groove, it made a right racket. Now I'm down from 3 to 2 rings, which is of little consequence as it's a 2 stroke.

You can usually tell if you rock the crank shaft back & forth. As the piston changes direction you will hear it. Like this it sounds a little like end play.

Sorry to hear it's got a problem at the minute but I'm sure you'll sort it without to much of a headache.

Andrew, are you bidding on any other engines on ebay ATM as there's a couple up for sale local that I might have a punt at if the price stays low. Very Happy

Hi All
Thank you all for your reply's and suggestion's.
The magneto impulse was i thought as well i swapped over the magneto+impulse from me other petter and still the same Sad . The video make's it sound quite but next to it running it's very loud sound's like it's going to go bang Sad
The only thing i cant check is the little end can't get circlip out of piston Sad At the moment out of idea's unless i transfer every thing over to the other petter and see what happen's.
Many Thank's
Andrew

Andrew sounds as if you've got plenty to keep you busy for now. Just tackle one job at a time so as to eliminate the problem, I hope it's nothing to serious and a cheap fix gets it up and running again.

Hi All
Another Update. I turned on fuel on about a quarter choke on she started easy then she was off i was chasing it round the shed in that time i could not hear the knocking got her steady hang on look's like she was over fueling.
Then i stopped her dragged her in middle of shed. Would she start again NO. Then on the floor is a gib key where's that from. Looked over to the flywheel bugger that's where it from fly wheel was about 3inch down the shaft.Fly wheel came off easier than i thought. Yes got me phone sorted i transfer pic's via bluetooth to netbook Smile
Many Thank's

Personally, and the choice is of course fully yours, I would leave it as is with that much paint on it, whack the flywheel back on, little tune up/tinker and done Smile

The paint work looks ok in the pictures so maybe just a tinker to set it up and make a sled or trolley for it. See if you can sort the other Petter and paint that one see how you go.
