Not a silly question at all (I don't think there's any such thing as a silly question really), in fact I was wondering exactly the same thing myself, as the ones on my nephews' engine are due to come off soon. I seem to remember from doing my old large Lister (L or M type I think) when I was a teenager, I think I sheared about 3 or 4 out of about 12 studs.

Generally the trick is to avoid a long hard pull on them, going instead for short, sharp, heavy blows with a hammer on the spanner or socket bar (shouldn't really use a ratchet for these kinds of jobs, although we all do from time to time). Short sharp shocks tend to get the nuts off without sheering them, long pulls tend to twist & sheer bolts & studs.

But I too would be interested to know if there are any special tricks with the D types, & if they are prone to sheering etc.

the main ones that seem to shear seems to be most in the cylinder head like the hopper cover bolts ,

if was me just give everything a good soaking in penetrating oil or Diesel for a week . go out every night and give another dose etc .... or heat works but let it cool down before trying to move it .

Yes the studs can corrode, these head studs from one of my D types appeared to be in decent condition until I started cleaning them up! Smile They are often bent as well.

Always before trying to loosen any nuts or bolts turn them the opposite way (tighten) to break the rust seal, then as you loosen keep turning it both ways to help clean the threads as you go, if there really rusty even after the first bit of movement keep applying you WD40 diesel what ever your using, if you get it off by 1 full turn soak it and leave over night again. Some times as you work them loose they get hot well this help to get them off so try and keep going if it's not to tight.
I think it's the top cover bolts where most of the problems are as they seize into the cover as well as the head.

One of the problems with using easing oil solutions on these is they are capped nuts. But if you slosh enough of it in there some of it's bound to go to the right place.

IIRC these are capped brass nuts on steel studs anyway, which is probably why you don't hear of that much trouble with them. But brass nuts can still cause problems.

we spent the morning in the shed regrinding the valves, work has somewhat stopped due to the none arrival of the new head gasket, its in the post was the answer when I chased it up. I am beginning to wish that I made one instead of buying one.

Was it Stationaryengineparts.com? Their stuff always seems to take a few days longer than anyone else's.

no, it was not stationary engine parts, it was from someone I had used several times before. although I suspect it's the royal mail that are holding the job up.

Not much post around here recently as the Post Office has banned the postmen from delivering in icy conditions in towns, should be returning to normal now though.

I could do with hiring Daisy for a week or two Richard, I might just get a few projects stripped for painting! I suppose she would cost a fortune in snap and drinks though so not really sure that I could afford her for long, it might just make your housekeeping go further for a week haha. Laughing
Really good to see her interested in the engine and it looks like a decent job being done as well, is the gasket from Brian Sims at Derby?

Pete.

What is that head gasket made from? It looks an odd colour. I'm always interested in new materials, especially if they're easy to cut & do the job, & I will probably be looking for a Lister D head gasket myself soon, I don't fancy paying Stationaryengineparts prices for one either. Shocked
