my daughters first engine.
my daughter daisy has been on at me for a while now to have her own engine, after a couple of phone calls and endless emails she was fortunate enough to have this donated to her by a friend from leyburn, he told her she could have it as long as she got it running.
after giving it a good looking at, the only problem was that it had no spark, further investigation found that the bearings in the magneto had seen better days. "you best get me some then dad", was the reply. i found simply bearings online a quick phone call and they came next day. the engine is now a runner so the strip down and rebuild can start.

That looks in pretty good nick, not sure how much of a strip down you'll need.
Nice find and a nice trolley too

Re: my daughters first engine.
Certainly looks to be in better nick than the one my nephews are soon going to have to sort out.
Always good to hear of young enthusiasts getting their hands dirty on their very own piece of iron.
How old is Daisy? Is she able to start it herself? (they're probably one of the easier handle start engines for a youngster).
Looking forward to the resto/rebuild thread (I need to start learning about Lister Ds pretty fast )

Re: my daughters first engine.
Wow lucky girl to be given an engine that could be put straight on to the rally field and well done dad for sorting the mag out for her. Has she given any thought to it's colour yet or happy for it to stay green?
Good luck Richard as I'm sure she's going to keep you busy over the winter with this engine.

colour.
when she first mentioned about her own engine, she was very keen on it being pink, a compromise has been reached where if she finishes this one then i will get her another engine (something smaller like a jap or villiers) and that can be pink.

Oh dad being crafty to see if she'll still be interested in a few months time or if a boyfriend or latest pop star might take it's place and not wanting to be stuck with a pink Lister D,.

as she said" we've taken all those bits off and split it in two."

DAISY! I knew it was a flower, a couple on our row have just had a daughter named Poppy and I wasn't certain which one was which ha ha! They do more interesting things at school than in my day, wouldn't have minded going if restoration was on the syllabus back then.

Best of luck with the restoration, it's good to see some youngsters are interested in restoring engines.

hello,
their is no wear in the bore, the engine is generally in good condition so a good one for her first try. I will make a smaller trolley for it, the other on weighed about as much as the engine. plus a smaller trolley will take up less space in the shed.

They maybe didn't have enough slate boards for you Pete.
I hope you don't mind me asking and if you've already said I'm sorry I must have missed it, but I was wondering how old your daughter is Richard?

Thanks Richard, I'm just wondering when my grandson might start to take an interest but don't want to push him into it as I did with my son and it turned him more against it. I'll leave him a few more years as he's only 2 now.

I was just thinking it looked like a Petter exhaust, but it'll do the job just fine. After all, Lister & Petter did eventually become the same company. Don't know when it happened though.

Re: my daughters first engine.
the exhaust came with the engine, eventually it will be replaced with a lister one. we are just waiting for the replacement head gasket to arrive so we can then put the head back on and make a start on the crank case.

Re: my daughters first engine.
might sound like a silly question - i am going to strip my lister down soon and was wondering if the head studs are prone to sheering and if so are they easy to replace - mine look well rusty i am not even sure if the nuts will come off them yet.
