Found a new toy
Another new toy picking it up tomorrow, its a Crompton Parkinson generator, 3 phase 130 volt with a piggyback dynamo for exitation,
generator is dated 1936, has had a new dynamo which is dated 1939, and by all accounts was on the ralley scene last year and its in full working order which is a bonus

WOW! That's a big'un!
What are you going to power it with? Could be military at that voltage, or could be domestic, as most of GB wasn't standardised electrically until after the war.

Re: Found a new toy
Nice looking bit of kit and it must be bloody heavy as I've a 24v genny and it takes me all my time to lift it. It is strange being 3 phase, don't know that much stuff that used 3 phase before the war so I wonder if it was made for maybe one or two specific uses.

Re: Found a new toy
Well have picked up new toy and am well pleased to say the least, after having a gander at the orignal field manual it turns out it is off a Coventry Climax 2.75 kva generating set, its 130 volts - 12.2 amps - 3 phase - 50 cycles, turned out not to be as heavy or big as i thought its about 1 1/2 foot high and about the same wide, weight wise id say around the 50 kg mark so not to bad, will need a new trolley and a good clean but other than that not a lot eles, will put some better pics up once ive unloaded it from the van, oh and its got some nice brass bits on lol

Re: Found a new toy
With not a lot eles going on at the moment and waiting on the wood for a trolley for the generator thought id strip and clean the volt meter and the recently aquired amp meter and socket have also managed to get hold of a couple of bakalite switches pics below.
Still need to find a vintage mains power switch and a vintage fuse panel but getting there

Lovely piece of kit there, interesting to know it is off a Coventry Climax as I may be going to look at a complete unit soon with half a mind to buying it.
What on earth are you going to power off it?

Matt I have to agree with you there, the old bugger manages to find some nice "bits n pieces" as he calls them, I'd call them treasures.

Try using these instead, they're smaller on the base than batten fittings, I used 2 of them for the Tarpen & even though you're buying 2 parts instead of one it still works out cheaper.
I'm not sure if this company do mail order, you may have a branch close to you, or you may just be able to go into another electrical wholesalers & ask for the same thing....
this....
Screws into this (after you fix this one to the board)....
Here's the links to where I bought mine....
Lamp holder....

Base plate....

Here's the link to their selection of brass light fittings....
http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Lighting_Menu_Index/Lampholders_1/index.html
These turn out very small & inconspicuous when fitted (that thread is only half an inch in diameter, just to give you an idea of scale). I'll get some pics of them on the Tarpen board & post them up for you tomorrow so you can see. I reckon they are a very neat & slightly cheaper alternative to the full batten holder.
Hope this helps. (BTW, their catalogue is much easier to navigate than their website, but their web search does work very well).
