That's what a clean bench looks like. Parky just take your time and I'm sure Kev will have his head over your shoulder watch you so nothing to worry about.

Thanks Stu
will do, the bench isn,t so clean now, it's hard to believe just how much muck has come of this small engine, good job i started off with something small, i said to kev last week, i hoped to get it painted last weekend gone, but the cleaning off as taken me a lot longer than i anticipated, but has sad has it may sound i've really enjoyed it, and i'am looking forward to seeing the finished article, will take photo's during renovation,

Re: New project......and first
Oh dear can I sence someone made a bo-bo we all make them, just remember the best tool in the box for old engines is patients.
Parky I think Kev knew how much muck was on that engine also. Look on the brightside the more you ckean it now the better the finish later.

Yes Stu,
made a real boo boo, put the bearing pullers on and it started to move, so i thought, i don't think it will need any heat
i didn't realise the amount of force those pullers give, still next time it will be less speed more haste, with a good dolup of patients thrown in,
still it's all a learning curve, have put the first paint on the cylinder tonight, pic to follow,

Re: New project......and first
Just remember to use the correct paint or do a test area first.
I won a Jap 2a on ebay a few days back and went to collect it on sunday, when I pulled up a the guys house there was old cars and vans everywhere. I gave the guy a lift down to a local farm to pick up the engine as he was on fixing his van when I turned up. Well on the trip down to the farm he was saying he's bought an old pick up but he had to buy all these stationary engines as well, to cut a long story short he's going to phone me to go down and see what there and make him an offer on them, there's villiers, clinton, B&S, and a few Stuart Turners and a lot of spares so I'll let you know how I get on.

Re: New project......and first
Stu,
I think i've got the right paint, but i think it might need thinning a bit????? or quite alot, it's left a lot of large line's and looks a bit of a mess at the moment, all part of the learning curve i guess, still it should sand down ok,

Re: New project......and first
sorry missed you again parky
been busy building the trailer for a more comfortable rally sleeper lifting the sides up 10" taller removing and fitting thicker and longer bracing timbers
so it wont collapse in transport and shed on wheels effect lol
got some perspex windows with alloy frames for some sun light to get in ,
bought enough gate hinges for the roof and front to fold down for transort and loading modes

it must be in need of some thinning by the sounds of it
or youve heated the shed up like an oven
so would think thinners as on tin , try mixing it with just a small jar/spray can lid worth of paint at first to see compatablity and then if you aadd to much thiner you can just tip it back into can and try again , do it to the tin of paint and then your bugered lol

Re: New project......and first
The large lines you have try cutting them with a razor blade before sanding then you needn't rub it all down again, then that can do as a first coat. As Kev say mix paint with thinners in a seperate tin so you can add paint/thinners till you get it right, I find to much thinners better then to much paint.
It's just practice and you'll soon get the hang of it.
Good luck,
Stu.
