Petter A1 - flywheel
Hi - my name is Andy and I am a new member. I live near Portsmouth, Hampshire and am currently renovating a 1945-7 Petter A1. I would like to try to remove the flywheel but can’t justify the cost of buying a gib key puller. Would any kind member in my area be prepared to loan me one?
Thanks in anticipation.

Re: Petter A1 - flywheel
Welcome Matey.
I don't know that engine but it's usually fairly straightforward to fabricate a suitable puller - typically a bit of thick bar with a slot and a couple of threaded holes in it. I have a few that have several different slots in them that I've adapted over the years. Always soak the key for a few days in your favourite penetrating fluid. I like PlusGas but the classic 50/50 mix of acetone and automatic transmission fluid also works well. You might have to make a temporary "dam/lagoon" to hold the fluid. I've always used bog standard glazing putty and sections of plastic cut from pop bottles but there might be a more technical solution!

Stuck Flywheel
Thanks for the kind offer and advice. After a week of soaking with penetrating oil I managed to extract the key with a morse taper. Now the flywheel itself is proving stubborn - and ideas? I don’t have a gear puller big enough - any work arounds before I purchase a bigger one?

Re: Petter A1 - flywheel
without damaging the crankshaft find a way to stop it rotating then try rocking the flywheel one way then the other, once you've got it moving polish the crank shaft, don't use abrasive papers, use the plastic abrasives that dont remove metal so that you can slide the flywheel off.

Thanks Maryalice - I managed to spin the flywheel off as you suggested with a bit of help from a lump hammer and steel bar placed through the back of tithe flywheel cowling. I was worried that I might damage it but by only tapping gently it came off ok. Andy
