im thinking its associated or amanco in style if its in the 1 1/2 1 3/4 hp size area
with the spark plug and ht mag pointing to later production to me
does the crankshaft have the hp raised in the un machined webs of the casting

Kev, is there a google translate function on the forum! I'm new to this, I can point to the crankshaft but the unmachined webs......

spit-bang Yep have seen a photo of a Bradford on the net and it does look similar, any thoughts on where I may find a makers mark?

Santa brought me some gunk, I'll start lifting some of the grime to see if anything appears, if it doesn't 'gunk and lemonade' makes an interesting snifter

There should be a brass plate on it somewhere with makers name, serial number etc.but they sometimes go missing

Welcome to the forum Steve,

Sorry its not an Associated, or an Amanco or a Bradford.

This is a Lion Engine Company product, initially of London, but later of Gillingham.
It would originally have had a brass tag, but probably gone missing with time.
Probably around 2hp in size.

yep just been looking at Lions on the net, looks a good match, I can calculate bore and stroke, is there a ready reckoner to estimate the horsepower?

Most of the ones on the net appear to be painted red, mine is green, any thoughts on original colour?

Don't know anything about this engine, but just looking at that video, the engine in it is absollutely massive! By the looks of it, the 8hp engine on the video would take up the full area of the wooden stand yours is on. I would imagine yours will be a lot less than 8hp.

Nice engine you've got though, I'd love something like that!

OK so we think it is a Lion. If the bore (the diameter) of the cylinder is 10.3 cms and the stroke (the distance the piston travels from full compression to end of cycle) is 13 cms, then I make this a 1000cc engine - please will someone tell me I've got the maths wrong because I'm starting to think this is a bit of a beast....

Hi Steve,
Sorry to say your maths look good to me:
The formula for the volume of a cylinder is Π r² h, where
Π (pi) = 3.142, r = radius and, h = height

so, if your measurements are correct, the volume is

5.25 x 5.25 x 3.142 x 13 = 1119 cc

Calm down, its not a beast. There is no comparison to a 1 litre engine of today  Exclamation

When these engines were built the measurements were in imperial.
So this is 4 inch bore and 5 inch stroke, which for say 500 rpm is about 2 to 2.5 horsepower.

I think I'm a bit more chilled!

and hot off the press it seems the original colour was red, and the remains of two brass fixings suggests there was a makers plate on it, which is now gone.

Still can't get a spark, suspect the mag, as the points seem stiff, I can open and close them but only by hand they don't seem to move as the mag drives....
