So I put in a bid on eBay and won this as a Dad and his lad project.

Villiers MK10 Engine01_zps6ada74d7

We started disassembling.

Villiers MK10 InBits01_zps10953cce

Cleaned up tank by pickling in citric acid solution (see my thread).

Villiers MK10 Tank01_zpsd6181bdc

Villiers MK10 Tank02_zpsd106a0a0

Same for the cowl using same solution mixed with wallpaper paste.

Villiers MK10 Cowl01_zpsaba9a6f8

Villiers MK10 Cowl02_zps8ceab423

Villiers MK10 Cowl04_zps3b22f4cf

Off with the flywheel to sort the ignition side of things. Points look OK

Villiers MK10 Points01_zps5372d751

but coil was goosed

Villiers MK10 MagnetoCoil_zps3457bc9e

Being a Yorkshireman there was no way I was paying four times what I paid for the engine just for a new coil so I decided to follow the excellent Coil Ignition Without A Battery "how to" by Matt (nutgone) rewound the coil then mounted an external ignition coil. Now getting a good spark.

Meanwhile, I showed my son how to use grinding paste and a stick and left him to it - did a fine job.

Villiers MK10 Regrind01_zpsa116e83a

We took the sump off and although it looks like it never had an oil change things look OK. Yes, there are lumps in the bottom!

Villiers MK10 Sump01_zps92e292c2

Now nice and clean.
Villiers MK10 Sump02_zpscbf1e478

No exhaust and inlet manifold had been repaired rather crudely.

Villiers MK10 Inlet_zps84c8dcd4

So ordered new plus some other bits and bobs from L&S Engineers. Really helpful people, great service and reasonable prices. Arrived next day!

Villiers MK10 Parts_zps1e62a5c0

But my son says I'm not allowed to fit them until he is home again !!

So I have done more work on the tank and cowl.
Villiers MK10 Shiny_zpse7c93b26

Can't wait to start re-assembling for a test drive.

Hi Paul,

Nice job! Good to hear that your son is interested in mechanics too.

Cowl and tank looks very clean. seems that citric acid is the good medicine to get rid of the rust.
Keep up the good work.
cheers  cheers  cheers

That looks like a pretty early Mk10 with the brass id plate on the side of the cowling.

Engine number is 743/82262D if that helps anyone date it.

Note also the carrying handle in first picture. I don't see that in any manuals or brochures. Maybe the first 'after market' enhancement?

Ok, my son has arrived so we can make a start Very Happy

Start priming (boring so no pics) and painting ( yeah - it's bit bright ain't it)

Villiers MK10 Cowl06_zpsb80583df

Villiers MK10 CrankcasePaint02_zps3b47ab78

Villiers MK10 Tank04_zps9be9b002

While everything is drying we start fitting new parts.

Fit new inlet:
Villiers MK10 NewInlet_zps63abd17f

Refit carburetter:
Villiers MK10 RefitCarb_zps540dd3b9

Fit new exhaust:
Villiers MK10 NeweExhaust_zps1e1d5051

Refit cowl and tank and we're done:
Villiers MK10 EngineDone01_zpsc69a2be5

Villiers MK10 EngineDone03_zpsc3e365a9

Villiers MK10 EngioneDone06_zps41b94a97

Yeah,  the fuel pipe is in the way should we want to couple something up but - whatever.

Apologies to Steef for not maintaining his high standards on the paint job, but we were more interested in the engineering side of things.

Now for a test run - just a squirt of gas in the carb'  and pray

https://vid1295.photobucket.com/albums/b639/y3531/FirstTestRun_zpsg8ilmjyy.mp4

Yeah - think we deserve a pint !

Thanks Steef.
Now working on a Villiers 11C. Much more difficult as I have no info, can't find a source of spares and piston is seized. May end up going for scrap Sad

Better news is I have just got hold of a Mk25 (I think).

Hello Woodsman,

First the compliments for your restoration from the Villiers mk10 motor, a nice job and looks again in perfect state.

I have myself 2 villiers mk10 motors for restoration, and I am busy in my free time to restoration them. it go's wel and the looks already nice and 10 time beter than they were
a rusted piece of iron.

The only thing were I run against it is the correct information of the engines.
I can not found nowere on internet a list were I can found the correct production dates.
I know that this engine is made from the early 40"s to late 60"s and found on the internet
that you can found the productiondate on edge the flywheel month/year

mine 2 engines :
mk10 serial nr is 347/120928D ( fly wheel nr 12/53 ) 1953
mk10 /2 hs serial nr is 910D 3107 ( fly wheel nr 11/62 ) 1962

this are very diffrent serial nr's , but of course 9 years between them...
and there ar more factory's who made them,,

Do you have already the right Production date discovered ?

hope to see the pictures from your other restorration engines....

Regards

Michel

Hi Steef,
Sadly, I have no production dates.  I understand that when the factory closed some of the tooling went to India but most paper records were destroyed. You could try Internal Fire - http://www.internalfire.com/
But I've tried to register twice and never got a reply Sad
