Villiers MK10 magneto
I wondered why my non running £30 MK10 had an external Lucas coil and a mangy piece of lighting flex coming out of an available hole in the backplate. Hmm, this doesn't look very standard issue....
So I got the flywheel and backplate off and guess what: noticeable by their absence were the HT coil and (far worse I suspect) the iron laminated cores that make the initial LV that gets jumped up by the coil for the spark plug. The points are there with a little add on condenser marked 150v 1 micro farad. Probably need some new insulation stuff to make them good again but generally they appear sound. Original condenser thing is in the back. So someone either had an external battery or was trying the impossible task of getting a spark without the right cores and magnets involved......
Question: if I got a template of an original laminated bit off a MK 10, it should be technically possible to make my own, with epoxy and flat steel sheet. Pipe dream or reality ? Might take a while but with a vertical belt sander and some dust, it could work...
I've had a decent search for spares, but this seems to be "part of the woodwork" as it were, so not flogged as a common part. MK 12 backplate on ebay; would that fit ?
Cheers in advance for any thoughts, and if it is doable by some consensus, has anyone got a MK10 in bits they could rub a bit of A4 over to delineate the edges of the cores and pop that in the post ?

Re: Villiers MK10 magneto
AFAIK the MK10 and 12 backplate are the same.

Re: Villiers MK10 magneto
Checked the MK10 & 12 parts list, it doesn't show any difference in the backplates.

Re: Villiers MK10 magneto
^I'd be interested to know how that's wired up for future reference. Do you need a separate battery?

Re: Villiers MK10 magneto
No battery needed if you have a duff coil. Just strip off all wire (HT and LT) and rewind with 20 swg copper wire - one end to earth and the other to existing LT 'terminal. Then wire in series with LT side of external coil.
See nutgone's excellent thread HERE
BTW. Anyone know of Matt's (nutgone) whereabouts?
