lister d portable milking set
Hi all,
My lister d came from a portable milking set that was mounted on a drag trailer with the front axle on a pivot. the previous owner contacted R.A Lister when they where still about, they told him the farm and farmer it was supplied to as part of a milking set and it cost £300 in 1947 that is all the info i've got. both me and the previous owner have no idea what make it was since it was in such bad condition no one saved it. I would love to find out what make it was or at least what it looked like so i can show pictures at rallies.
so if anyone has any pictures, and manufactures you can give me or even has a lister d powered milking set i would love to know. My only guess at the moment is alpha laval since it was the biggest milking company.
the only thing i have got from the milking set apart from the engine is the different exhaust. i can supply a picture if that would help.
thank you very much,
Callum

One of mine, a Gascoigne set (pic not mine, but me in it!). Lister provided D Types to Alfa Laval, Gascoigne, Simplex and Fullwood among others. An email to David Edgington (address on the forum somewhere) giving your engine details he should be able to say who it was originally supplied to.

thank you very much for the picture and the manufactures names, I think mine was incased in a sort of 'engine bay' though. hence the different exhaust.

Well engines in milking parlours usually had the exhaust routed through the wall for obvious reasons, could have a case of 'cattle cough' otherwise!

although i know mine was mobile as it was on a trailer and was taken out to the remote fields. the exhaust doesn't look too dissimilar to a petter diesel exhaust. so i don't think it as designed to go through walls, just a a small hole in the engine bay side.

Probably on a portable milking bail then Callum, they took the 'parlour' to the cow rather than vice versa. There is the remains of a D in the middle of a field locally that hasn't moved for 20+ years that was on a bail, quite a well known landmark in the area now!

thanks, i searched portable milking bails on google but i can only find modern examples. though at last years GDSF there was a lorry with a lister d powered parlour with an engine bay, milking area and equipment bay/section. it was a really good display with plenty of period tool ect.
