New member with new engine
Hi all and thanks to everyones welcome in the new member section.
I said there I've just got a Wolseley WD2 which I have just started work on but in the meantime I have acquired something else, hope this dose'nt mean I'm addicted already
It's a 12v generator/ four stroke engine with a plate that says "Marathon Electric Mfg. Corp." model GDP 300. Been searching on Google for any reference to it with no luck at all so my first question is does anyone here know anything about it?
Second problem is the piston was well seized and the crankcase was full of water! ( well it was only £10! )
I have managed to free the piston and the rings ( after much soaking and praying) but the bore was very corroded. I have removed the corrosion but it's left it quite pitted. I've got a three pronged cylinder hone I could smooth it out a bit with but will it still run O.K.?
Surprisingly the crankcase was almost in good condition despite the water, no problems I hope.

LOL had that in my watch list as am after a generator for one of my engines, looks like a nice little set up and quite a project sorry cant be of more help but iam sure some one will be along to answer your questions real soon

I've now worked out the engine is a Briggs and Stratton made ,I think, in 1943. Hoping to get the engine side of it running (or not!) in a day or two. Also found that one of my original ideas of using the genny/dynamo on its own with my Villiers Mk12 if I couldn't get the engine working is a non starter! The dynamo armature is hung off the end of the engine crankshaft- on it's own it has no bearings at all! This might be common knowledge to most but a revelation to me:shock: All good fun !

I might have a briggs crankcase here somewhere.
But it look Suffolk punch to me that block. Just had another look at the photo and that is a Suffolk punch engine, fairly early on too.
Bits are alot easier to find. Let me no as I've just broke 2 and have another 3 in stock.

Thanks for your replies guys but now I am completely confused. I was convinced this is a B&S engine! I've downloaded a B&S manual covering various engines and everything I've seen in it ties in with what I have. My engine has an oil pump in the sump, worked off the camshaft, it squirts a jet of oil straight upwards towards the big end and cylinder. Did Suffolk engines have this?
I have the engine on its own running now but it's quite a bit smokey although I think it's improving a bit with running in (could be wishful thinking of course!)
Any help very much appreciated!

Oil pump off the camshaft can't say I've ever heard of one of those on a small engine.
There normally splash lubricted off a dipper on the bottom of the Conrod
I've broke a few small briggs and also suffolks but never seen that.
Sounds a bit risky to me have a oil pump like that what if it stops pumping how can you tell.
Even lister ds and wolseley are only splash lubricated.
I'm uploading photos of a Suffolk which looks just like yours. So you can compare.

Most likely a Briggs Model N (or possibly a Model I similar to my one), they were used mostly on generators and date from the 1940's area. Most Briggs engine's from that time had oil pumps, they were often removed on overhaul and dippers fitted to the conrod. Check that the pump spring works by putting some oil in the sump (sump removed from engine) and watch it squirt! http://www.asecc.com/data/briggs/engnotes.html

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum, it's a brilliant site, your engine certainly looks like a briggs, if you go onto google, type in www.gravelyguy.com, you will see a range of briggs engines that he has, he is a collector of these engines and is a really helpful guy, hope that it's some use to you, many thanks, regards, Ralph.

Thanks for all your help chaps, I don't know who to thank first so can just say thanks all! The pics of the oil pump are exactly the same as mine. I think I am going to need some help with the dynamo side of this project next, it has a starter function which is working fine, connect up battery, turn switch and starts first time, every time, wonderful! But as yet I can't seem to get any charging output, I think the electrics have
all been messed about with considerably in the past, will try to get some pics tomorrow. Good news is, the exhaust has much less smoke than it had a day ago, despite the pitted bore, still smokes when revving but ceases when it settles down so I have some sort of high hopes it may be even better with more running in.

I was right, i definately need some advice with the charging side of this project, I can get practically no output at all. I've disconnected the dynamo wires from the control box and connected the field winding in parallel with the armature and it motors perfectly with 12v applied, no overheating or brush sparking. I think doing this should make sure there is some magnetism in the motor but on connecting a meter I still only get .3 volts turning it at 2000 or 1000 rpm. Field coil reads 6.2 ohms. Tried flashing the field coil on its own, still no difference. Armature looks OK to me, no burnt commutator segments.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated (before I consign this to the back of the shed!)
