Bit more cleaning and "rework" done tonight, finished off the valve chamber, cleaned out the threads for the pipework with a 1.25" tap, all cleaned out well with minimum damage found after cleaning.

The drain plugs were bunged up solid with crap and not a pipe thread, as I only had one of the original plugs I decided to tap them out to 1/4BSP and just add some normal plugs for these.

If you look here you can see what I mean about the castings being very poor, this ridge is about 4mm high and almost as wide.

Finished up with tonight parts coated with a coat of red oxide, next will be the under coat.

Wouldn't bother thinning it, it's as thin as piss straight from the tin! That's why I like it, it covers well and doesn't "skim" over pits in the casting.

I get on ok with it and I can't paint!

thats exactly what this is ... its all flat and dull .

i need to find some paint now ... its a dark green on the fairbanks but its not like mid brunswick green . Any suppliers of paint thats not too expensive like craftmaster ?

I'm a "whatever I have" man, most of mine are Dulux painted. Go for Craftmaster, there paint is fairly good.

so is the price tag Rolling Eyes  not sure if need to strip paint all off as its a sound base so could just flatten it back and paint over .

I always strip right back to more or less bare metal, that way you know you are not going to have problems. More work that way but less chance to go wrong if the paint doesn't take.

surpose in this case the fairbanks has not got alot of parts to strip off or alot of paint to cover ....

I have been tempted in the past to 'paint over' but in the end I stripped the old off instead and started from scratch.  That way you dont cover a lot of the detail which thick coats of paint tends to do, I dont bother filling pits etc and flatting down though as I'n not trying to win a concours event!Laughing   I looked at my first D type yesterday which was buried under sheets at the rear of the garage and (apart from where I had to remove the head to replace the gasket a few years ago) the nearly 20 year old paint is still good and would shine up nicely.  Just a shame that I cannot get the same paint these days (maker no longer trading) as touching up the damage would improve it no end.

Makes me laugh when I read of folk 'restoring' an engine over a weekend, oh no they haven't!Mad

I'd leave that for a bit Matt, not that bad, my appletop is worse than that and I'd happily rally that for a few more years, give it a squirt of WD40, be supprised how that brings up the paint.

Pete , i might be tempted just to give it a good rub down and flatten off with some wet and dry on the main casting and should be good for a base as the paint it tough as hens teeth !

only thing is the winter in coming up and wonder about paint drying .... guess i will have to have the heather on in the shed .

Will that be 'Lucky Heather' in the shed Matt?Laughing Laughing   I bring anything small enough indoors for painting during winter, that little shearing set was done in the loft last winter!  I also painted my WD in the kitchen, got an understanding missus though haha.  Put a coat of paint on just before bed time and it is dry by morning, that way the dog doesn't rub against it.Wink
