villiers mk 20 engine
Hi Just signed up with the sight My name is Steve fuller i'm an ex REME mech retired . i have come across an old Villiers Mk20 pumping unit it was in ok condition the guy who bought it wanted it to pump water from a dike to his water tanks. but he couldn't get it going so he left it 20 years. i got it from him as a challenge to see if i could get it to run. carb was clogged and I think is still flooding a bit im working on it.
The ignition appears to fire a couple of times and stops. I could do with a diagram of the ignition system and the carb. i will get photos to upload but the carb has a manifold that bolts onto the top of the carb and has a jet at the base of the carb you can adjust and another fixed jet that screws into the brass central tube in the carb intake . it appears to now be clean the brass float is good and doesnt leak
I cant find a float bowl gasket so it could end up silicon for now. any hint or picture would be big help.
Regards Steve

Hi Steve and a warm welcome to the forum.
Villiers are a nice little engine to start with IMHO. The fact that it has a spark is a blessing - normally old Villiers coils are shot. What sort of pump is it?
Maybe best to start a new thread in New Projects/Restorations and post a few pictures when you are able.
I have a manual/parts list for the engine if you would like a copy.

Hello and welcome from another Villiers fan!
float bowl seals are available from: https://villiersservices.co.uk
You may find the body of the carb is pitted where the seal fits and will need dressing with a needle file, plus a smear of gasket cement to get a good seal. Flooding could be a poorly seating needle valve, the smallest speck of dirt will hold it off it's seat.

Hi Mattblack
Yes thats the carb the user manual recommends a gentle tap to re seat the float valve i may try that . i made an oring seal for the float bowl hopefully it will work.
do the points on these have a condenser behind the back plate ? i have some 12v lucas condenser's which may work. i dont really want to pull off the base plate without a decent picture.
i have been using TDC as a best guess by turning flywheel and watching piston when both valves closed and piston rising to top of barrel stopping 3/16 before the top of piston travel. im assuming its a bout right cant find a timing mark.
Thanks for input .
the pumping unit was a trolley mounted affair with two wheels and a skid used by the military to pump water i have the pump and trolley apart at present could not see the point of working on that if engine was no good. but i will post some photos of the engine and pump shortly.
regards steve

I would like a copy of manual is it on a PDF or hard copy
Pump unit is quite heavy for its size i will take some photos and post them it is free running and lucky not to badly corroded.

Re: villiers mk 20 engine
Points start to open at 3/16" before TDC, you need to set the gap at .012" - .016" first. The condenser is in the back of the round points housing. I see no reason why a car type condenser wouldn't work, even if you had to fit it somewhere else.
