IHC type LB brought home.

Hello folks,

I had the phone call everyone would want to get after waiting a bit for the owner of an engine to come home from holidays to tell me that the engine is ready for me to come and get

Hopped in the truck, and drove out for about three hours, and was welcomed and pleasantly surprised with hospitality the way it should have done.

He had taken the engine out of storage and checked it over and gave it a run before I arrived there, and then explained to me that I have a very nice running old girl here and in tip top shape other than outside cosmetics which he was never intending to touch anyway.

After some conversation and a laugh or two I finally got to grab that handle and gave it a go.
There was no hesitation.., it simply puffed into life without any reservation at all.

It ran perfectly adjusted and never missed a beat, the same result when put on the high setting.., just happy to show off its characteristics, and they were excellent! I peeled off some currency and I owned a second old stationary engine for the first time in my life

I am impressed with the running of it, and it probably made me more willing to spend all my money on old iron like this. I thought I had the bug when I brought home the Lister D, but that was nothing compared to the feeling I got when I had one that actually turned over and started

It is all new again to me, and I found that to be funny, as I have done a lot of things with engines small and large, but this category seems to have taken on a personality all it's own and bowled me over when I wasn't looking

I must have run it a dozen times today, and only quit when I couldn't think of anyone else to invite over to see it and all of the friends that came today have never had one and all claimed to want to get one

I am going to try to do the first video for the first time tomorrow, as I have never posted one in my life, this is going to be fun and interesting so I'll try it for tomorrow some time and hope to do it right.

I have not seen one of those, (but then I'm new to this hobby). Intrigues that it has a lid on the water hopper. I made a wooden lid for my first Lister D to stop the splash.
I wonder why it has a cover over the end like that?

I'm also slightly envious that you live somewhere where you can run engines practically all day, if you wish. I've just got my Kohler running & every time I think about turning that handle to hear that lovely song I have to consider the neighbours, sitting in their lounge, just a few yards away

Oh well, at least I consider them. My parents are talking about moving somewhere with a bit more space, & as long as I pull my weight I can go with them (I think my dad wants to start restoring more vintage stuff & wants a bigger workshop & I know my mum would like a bit more space & a few more animals), so maybe I will be able to run engines to my hearts content soon, just like you.

Great news John you must be very pleased with it. Looking at your's there's a few parts I need for mine. I know you won't miss them so could I have them off your engine please. I need the tin ware that goes over the rockers and the hopper cover. You never know once I get my life back on track it might be the next engine for the shed.

You may want to change your mind on the tin ware!!!

I was lucky with this engine a few times over I think, as the man that sold it to me told the story of how he obtained those same two items in a sale in Florida.
The hopper lid was $20 US and is a cast original, and the front cover was $100 US! and also an original, almost should have doubled the price I bought it for for the trouble of it all But he was like I would have been.., sell it for a reasonable price sticking with the price trends, never mind the cost of love and labour!! and hard to get he said, not common to get originals that easy.

I still have to get out there and do a video of it running (it has started to snow again) but may not have time left to do it before dark today.

I'm working to get the pickup truck sorted and finished hopefully today, but allready know it's not going to happen like that.
(Remove petrol tank (it's a bitch believe me!), replace sending unit, add aux inlet with elec on-off switch and fuel gauge, re-install tank, add auxilliary Aluminium 25 gallon tank bought 2 days ago, mount and fix into the system and check everything for integrity, repair the cap's rear liftgate and have a beer!)
I will most likely only have the chance to have that beer!

Better than in the city where neighbor "Biffy noise" is rampant in the flats and duplexes.

I need to know if I can post from the handycam card directly, I have no youtube videos to post from.

Yep, it's a start, now I need to learn how to polish the videos so they're a bit more pleasant

Anyway.., It starts first thing no matter if frozen or just cold or warm, as long as you are not holding a camera (there must be a proximity setting for that somewhere.)
The crank handle sticks from retracting a bit and needs to be sorted lest my right arm turn into a bleedin pretzel.

The $100 cover at the front protects the push rods and oil sponge tray from rain, bugs, horses and other pests, and any oil that drips off is caught and drained away by the little pipe you can see at the left bottom of the cover which runs the waste off onto the corner of the fuel tank to keep it lubricated :chin: (I assume the designing engineer must have quit IHC after designing that marvel as they were produced that way and never changed ) I'll have to put on a bit of rubber hose to make it catch the oil in a small can.
Another neat project for me to play with.

Well I did good today, I fixed the lift gate on the truck cap, got some things squared away never to bother me again and I temporarily have the truck's diesel engine running from one of the 5 gallon boat tanks. I can even prime the engine with the bulb which is still attached. (some Fine Dutch engineering there!), so now it runs with unrestricted fuel supply and normal, which it hasn't done for a few months.

I can work on the main tanks now and modify the run time on long trips to more than double what I had, to aproximately 1400 miles per fill up with a loan from the bank for fuel so I can go and collect the engines that are a bit farther away
All I need now is to install a potty seat so I don't have to stop at all.

For the record I don't think you can post videos straight onto the forum, I think they need to be hosted on YouTube or Photobucket first.

Try going to your settings on YouTube, somewhere there you'll be able to set your videos to "Public" so we can all see them.

Ouch John those parts ain't cheap, if I want them I'll have to call round when your not in and break in to your safe (I take it that's where you'll keep them LOL) You've reminded me I need to repair the little pipe that runs into the drip tray on mine, as it's come out of the union. I think you must be lucky to have a good starter because checking round they are either a good starter or bad nothing else.

I can see the vid it says private to me also also I don't know about showing on the forum, I've only ever shown 1 video and that was via photo bucket.

Sounds as if your planning a nice round trip to pick up an engine, you'll have to fill up with red diesel (agricultural) or find a trucker that has some to spare wink wink Hope you manage to get your truck sorted soon then you have more time to play with your engines

I did like my one, but the pulley runs on a 4:1 reduction and it wouldn't drive the milking gear fast enough

My grandfather once had an IHC LAA. Lovely engines but don't know much about them!

I was into the rust at birth as soon as I hit the ground
I had my first moped apart when I was 8.
I still love engines and hope to live long so I can sit in my rocking chair and awe the wee great grand children with rusty old iron
