Unknown engine - Any ideas?
Below are pictures of an engine I got towards the end of last year. Its original owner had passed away and his son did not know much about it apart from he had seen it running when he was young in his fathers farm connected to a dynamo to charge batteries.
It is not currently running as there is no spark from the magneto. The magneto is marked M-L Coventry. The pickup to the magneto is broken and I have yet to find a replacement (any suggestions). I suspect that I will probably change it to a Lucas RS1 if I can find an anticlockwise one anywhere so I can at least get the engine running. I cannot find any makers mark on the engine.

I have looked on the internet and have yet to see an image that matches this engine.

I'm the same not sure what it is, there's a few places that sell mag parts it's just find the correct one.

Thank you for the link. I have used them in the past when my father and I were restoring a Coventry Climax fire pump for a friend of mine.
Below is an image of what remains of the pickup.

The brass screw for connecting to the coil lead is not holding in the remains of the housing. If I can find a replacement pickup I may be able to recondition the magneto myself.
Regards,
David

Re: Unknown engine - Any ideas?
Finally got the magneto off. The magneto is a M-L Coventry type K1 (no CA 41411). Does anyone know where I can get a pickup for this?

David

Re: Unknown engine - Any ideas?
Stuart Turner made some horizontal engines which had a chain driven magneto. I don't have any pics but it's a starting point.

M L magneto now working and giving a proper spark. Saves having the change all of the sprockets and chains to take a different mag.
Condenser had shorted out but coil was still OK. Modern replacement capacitor fitted after much swearing at trying to get the old one out of the rotor assembly and praying that the head of the rusty screws that held the old capacitor in place did not shear. One step closer to getting the engine running .

In fairness, it's not a hugely uncommon engine and has been successfully identified on two other forums.

Leek, actually.
And I had identified it; I just chose not to post.
