Thanks for sharing the video of your latest engine Des. Personally I think small engines look better painted up but it's up to the owner. You can get a new tap from Villiers parts, probably more then the engine cost or they do come up on ebay often and a more reasonable price same with the exhaust.

Hi,
Thanks for your replies. I have now got the head off. Quite oily inside. There seems to be some play on the exhaust valve. It looks as if the guide maybe worn. The previous owner had it running and the engine would give irregular puffs of blue smoke from the exhaust. I can't feel any play at all on the piston. Video to follow.
Cheers,
Des.

Re: Villiers mark 12/2.
Thanks for posting the 2 videos very good info for anyone starting out with there first engine, they can learn a lot. Glad to see you don't dwell on parts that are worn down by age (That was one of my biggest worries when I first started, then reliased there wasn't a lot I could do) i.e. valve stems. If once you have it all rebuilt and it's a bit smokie you know what the problem is and it's nothing to cause major concern.
Keep up the great work, next the carb strip down then looking forward to the rebuild and the engine running.

Re: Villiers mark 12/2.
Thank you.
The way I look at it ,this is a very old engine that's seen alot of work. i'm not worried about returning to new condition. I purchased an NSU Quickly moped a few years ago and rebuilt it from a box of bits with many bits missing. The frame and mudguards had quite alot of surface rust. I nremoved all this and did a full repaint which I regretted. I lost that "old" look.
Due to an error on my part the tappet clearances are about 0.002" over the max 0.010". I hope to do another videos in the next few days.
Cheers,
