Fuel tank sealant

Hi all,

Im going to be repairing the holes at the bottom of my Petter A fuel tank.

Its getting a plate welded to it before i seal it some how.

Has anyone used such a thing and what could you advise me?

I have used POR 15 from Frost Automotive with good results over the past 10 years or so, it isn't cheap though and you do need to use the Marine Clean to get the best result. The tins of sealer can be resealed and used for other tank's though.

Thanks for that Pete, ive had a look at the stuff i will only need the 8oz tin as the petter tanks are only small.

Whats the stuff like to work with and how long does it take to cure?

Make sure that the tank is REALLY CLEAN AND DRY (some use a hairdryer to dry the tank, but I just leave it somewhere warm for a day or two) and follow the directions on the tin. You need to block up where the tap fits, and try and stop the sealer getting in the threads, and pour the contents of the tin into the tank (shake the tin first). Swill it around for a few minutes while holding a rag over the filler hole and after ensuring that it is well covered you can drain the excess back into the tin and reseal it, it will keep well if you don't let air get to it. Leave the tank to drain for a day or so, it will "go off" after a few hours but will take a couple of days or more to harden off, the longer that you leave it the better. Be carefull that you clean all the sealer from anywhere that you intend painting as it is hard to paint over and the sealer is silver in colour so it shows! Don't ask how I know!
