Hi Luke
I would undo the fuel pipe or tap with a container underneath the tap to catch the petrol.....

ED

Im no expert and im sure other members will have a better method.. Very Happy

Luke,

you said your fuel tap has snapped off, but didn't say where, or whether you can still turn off the fuel or not.

So, assuming the tap is not operating at all, and that you have no way to close the tap...
First, do this with a cold engine, not hot just after running. That way there's less risk of fire.
Get a container that will hold more than the contents of the tank. Use a wide mouthed one, so that it will be easy to get the petrol into it. A bucket would be good, but your mother might not appreciate you using her best one.
Now, get a spanner and start to disconnect the fule line from the carburettor. Its going to spill petrol everywhere as it flows from the tank, and thats why you need the bucket ready to catch it all.
Wait till it runs out, then the tank is empty.

Take the lid off and look inside. Is it empty? If so, you can now undo the tap. Undo the fuel line from the tap first and remove it. The tap has got a filter inside that is like an inverted sock sticking up inside the tank. This comes out with the tap. Undo the tap then lower it downwards to remove the tap and its filter.

Good luck.
Geoff

Ed,

I thought only to amplify your very succinct explanation for the sake of someone probably less experienced. I remember when I was 14, (40 odd years ago), and my Dad would say "just get the head off that engine would you", and I didn't have a clue.

if the fuel taps stuck in the off position you could undo the pipe from the bottom of the tap, remove the tank from the engine then tip the petrol out into a petrol can.
