Re: 1938 Lister 23D2H pump set
All went well today and I'm ultra pleased with my acquisition. Along with it came a lever arch box full of guides and manuals and some parts. The engine is December 1938. The H1D2 is listed at a cost of £31.15.0
The petrol filter is a folly as the real issue is the tank is very dirty inside and the petrol tap was blocked solid. I found the filter bracket was actually araldited to the block and it promptly came off lol
It's a match
The hopper lid fixings have been tapped out to 3/8" BSW but oddly the bolt heads only accept a 9/16 AF spanner.
Petrol tank has zero damage externally but I may need to PETSEAL it after a thorough clean inside.
Magneto is most likely in good order

Still busy with another job but I have resurrected the petrol tap and its filter which were completely bunged up with congealed petrol and rust.
The tap actually does not leak now that it also allows fuel through in the open position.

I've learnt that this filter bowl should have a cone shaped wire mesh but it has been removed. I've received some brass mesh today to rebuild it correctly.
I managed to fully dismantle the carburettor.
First coat of paint direct onto meticulously clean bare metal.I think it will need three coats.

Re: 1938 Lister 23D2H pump set
I'm on this full time from today.
The pump came off easy.
The petrol tank is being stripped and primed one side at a time to find any previous repairs. So far not bad..
The carb is rebuilt
On to the trepidatious tasks
That was easy
The flywheel gib key
Finally an opportunity to applaud the previous mechanic who understood that yes it does need to come out again one day.
12" flywheel
Engine off
Cast iron base off
The next mission

The mahogany base is probably the only part of the trolley I can rescue.
I have hopefully fixed the large split with a bit of improvisation.

Lucas RS1 Magneto top cover cap repair.
Being badly damaged I placed an appeal out for another cap.
A poor response pushed me to be creative.
Apparently the damage is done by a poor attempt to remove the original steel screw.
I cleaned it up enough to apply solder flux
Prepared a 4mm brass nut the same and tinned both before placing together.
Turned a 4mm brass screw to a point
Effective
A final clean and all the cracks in the Bakelite were repaired with Zap-a-Gap CA

Where did you put the appeal out for a new cap, I've not seen it.

Returning to this following advice I have made a brass mesh sheet fit where it was missing.
First I made a former for the shape.
The finished product ready for service.
I'm fortunate that all the slotted screws on my engine actually came undone with a well fitting screwdriver so when I refit the petrol filter it can fix directly to the crankcase instead of the bodge of a bracket it was on.

I spent today stripping the cast iron base.
I sympathetically hid the casting defect without changing the general imperfections.
I'm thinking that this will be painted black to contrast with its passengers

Re: 1938 Lister 23D2H pump set
I’ve just bought Ambersil Satin black so that decision is set.
Also I’ve ordered Rattal grey for the trolley to simulate a plinth.
Edit
I just recollected or the wife did that I have some Halfords grey texture paint that is no longer available
I bought it for my model lifeboat anti slip deck and have plenty spare

Re: 1938 Lister 23D2H pump set
The mahogany board is now made good and 12mm studs fitted.
It never was quite wide enough but I'm modifying it and making it look like a cement slab
Wheels etc arriving tomorrow.
I found some pictures of a H2 pump unit with 1.5HP engine. Note the engine is raised by the base for alignment with the bigger pump.

Re: 1938 Lister 23D2H pump set
The paint I've used
Total thickness is 70mm
Now waiting for 16mm SS 304 rod to insert into the axle tubes and end caps to complete the trolley.
Today I discovered that the slotted screws in the block are actually a BSF thread, 3/8" 20G
I'll be using the top one to mount the fuel filter

Re: 1938 Lister 23D2H pump set
The RS1 Magneto is now operational
The Bakelite is finished with Tamiya matt black. The made to measure HT lead the SS crews for the cap and the Chain are all from the same ebay seller whom I use often.
It has a strong regular spark
The trolley axles are now finished with 16mm 304 SS bar
Good progress this weekend with many parts ready for painting
All seems to be in very good condition, I suspect it spent a lot of its life out of service from fuel contamination

Be aware that black paints often contain carbon which is conductive so in damp conditions it may cause a problem.

Re: 1938 Lister 23D2H pump set
Tamiya is an acrylic blend of water & alcohol based resins rather than enamel. I don't expect any such issues with tracking any more than any damp surface might.

Re: 1938 Lister 23D2H pump set
A good few hours today saw numerous more parts stripped of paint and rust.
The block is now stripped of everything but the various studs and will be cut back to bare metal and primed tomorrow followed by a first coat of gloss.
I’m amazed at the condition of the moving parts for its age. Original piston etc and really excellent, nothing needs doing other than a clean and a look at the valve seats which I expect to be equally unworn.

Re: 1938 Lister 23D2H pump set
I’m going to attempt making a head gasket from this tomorrow
I can’t recall what I bought it for a decade ago
It certainly seems man enough, sure it’s high pressure steam stuff

Re: 1938 Lister 23D2H pump set
Andy, that is the same material that I have used on the Scott engine. Seems to be a good quality gasket sheet and is available in various thicknesses, which proved very useful to me when I was attempting to obtain the correct piston to head clearance.
