Re: Petter W1H refurb (1950)
I did a long day
exhaust/manifold stripped and painted
A spare carb I already refurbished.
Started mechanically stripping the old paint
Cleaned and checked the piston/rings, I found the middle ring was binding due to a tiny dent on the edge of its groove.
Refitted the barrel and set the tappets 10 thou
Sorted the decompression lever and the magneto interface
Hopefully finish stripping tomorrow

Nicely done. Don't know if to strip and paint my PB or get my mate to Cerakote it. Exhaust and carb that is.

Re: Petter W1H refurb (1950)
Thanks Steve.
A short but productive day.
Almost finished stripping and priming.
After removing the crankcase access plate I checked the sump and found it to be a good half inch deep in jellied oil. So I drained all the oil that was still fluid and poured a litre of paraffin in.
A paint brush taped to a stick enabled reaching extremities and its now clean.

Lovely Andy. Sorry I can't imagine this one sitting forlornly in a farmer's field! Another restoration up to your usual high standard. Keep it up.
Cheers,
Neil.

Re: Petter W1H refurb (1950)
Thank you Neil
The reflection of the belt drum in the flywheel is amazing
I’m sure the paint will dull in a few weeks
At least it’s back to the original colour even if the high gloss is not original.
I’ll never be an oily rag man. Personally an engine that did its service and survived deserves the best attention for its retirement.
I’m looking forwards to showing this alongside the Lister D of same age. They really do hit it off together with 50 rpm separating the beats.
I’m making a lid for the hopper too, I glimpsed an image in an advert with one but not good enough to copy. I’m making it from an IKEA chopping board.
Rough draft

Still needs a bit of tweaking and some tiny bubbles indicating head gasket issue. I’m assured these all leak a little but I’ve ordered a composite replacement from SEP

Thank you
The hopper lid is done too. I wondered what the purpose of this might be but having tried moving the engine while the hopper has water in it becomes obvious especially when its hot water.

I thought the lid was to stand your mug on to keep your tea warm...

dunno but I’ve just seen boil in the bag sticky toffee pudding in a hoppermattblack wrote:I thought the lid was to stand your mug on to keep your tea warm...
For those steel wheels that I really hate I have ordered 3mm thick self adhesive backed rubber to make them tolerable
Tomorrow I’m beginning the refurb of the original carburettor along with scavenging the 11 carbs I bought on eBay for £77
White vinegar can be found on Amazon at under £10 for 10 litres delivered.

Re: Petter W1H refurb (1950)
Well, I thought the lid was to avoid the water slopping all over the nice shiny polished flywheel rims and making nasty rust streaks! Seriously, do you treat the polished surfaces to counter corrosion, if so what do you use? I have used A.C.F. spray in the past but I just wondered what you used, if anything.

Re: Petter W1H refurb (1950)
I took the hopper off today in preparation for the new head gasket.
Immediately one is struck by how much easier the W1H is to service than the A1, 7 nuts and the fuel pipe connector and you’re done.

Re: Petter W1H refurb (1950)
Cast wheel upgrade
Shod in 3mm self adhesive rubber
The starting handle wasn't going to be neglected either.
I ground off an old weld on the end of the handle, drilled and tapped 6mm
Finished with an SS washer and screw
Stripped and primed with my favourite
An interesting page from the manual

Well done Andy, another one completed to your high standards. Would look great on any rally field or as an exhibition display model.
