Post by seniorengineers Fri Dec 21 2012, 23:01

Hi Guys,
As promised, here is a new posting for the rebuild of my ap ruston, (see my pride and joy for pic's) I will post progress as soon as we get some decent weather. I have cleaned and prepped the hopper tank, and will paint that ,hopefully next week together with a few other parts. The cam rail was seized, and i have free'd it off with no ill affects, apart from minor scoring of the main shaft, that i have now filed out and smoothed off with emery cloth. I am waiting to hear from Ray Hooley with regard to info I requested. some, or all of the gaskets needed, I can make my self. I have purchased proper paint from a local supplier consisting of u/coat, and engine enamel finish. I have decided on brunswick green of a dark shade that I personally think will reflect it's originality. Some of you guys may have other idea's, and I will always look at comments sympathetically, as I am a determined person and usually follow my own idea's. The main engine block is outside under cover at present, and as soon as I have sorted out other parts, I will bring it inside for a clean up and full paint job, b4 I start assembly. I will also get some pic's posted of the trailor I am refurbishing, that will house the engine as a permanent fixture. Please, no comments on trailor towing and c&u regs here, I have read more than enough.thankyou. I will post progress soon. cheers david.

It's about time we heard how your getting on with it, I thought your memory had gone with being so old. Laughing Laughing Laughing Anyways, glad you've got it home and making good progress so what are you planning on doing and in which order? Finish the trailer and mount engine then continue to restore or rebuild the engine, paint it first.

Hi Stu, less of the old, I can still give you a run for yer money Laughing Laughing ,anyway, I'm looking to sort out most parts on the engine, then paint. I will need to get floor on trailor at least,as I not gonna be able to lift the fully built engine onto the trailor, so intend to assemble on the trailor when weather permits, as I only have a small shed, (10' x 13') that is bulging at the door with tools and equipment for me radiator work, and now i have most of the engine in there too. engine block will be cleaned outside, and dragged into shed for painting, then out onto trailor, as i will need to get crank and flywheels in for attention and painting. so as you can see, I am relying on the weather. It needs to be a dry day when I am painting as I have as much water inside the shed as is outside with all the condensation. cheers david.

Depending how I get on with the building, and funds available, I am one of these guys who don;t give a hoot regarding travel, and fuel costs. Too many guys around whinging about costs of this and that. Can't be doin with it. We either go to an event or we don't. If I got the funding, I will go anywhere, once I be up and running, even Nuenen, given the chance. cheers david.

That's great David, it just seems to be part of the job to restore and find out as much as you can about the engine. I can't find any details (nor other owners) for my Bradford and it seems like it's missing something, yes it's age built sometime in the 1940's and that's all I know. Crying or Very sad .

I need to get on with me trailor build and with the bulk of the engine parked on it, it is difficult. Looking forward to meeting richard as he is another member on here i will have met.. If I find summut that I particularly want I will travel so long as I have funds to do so. cheers david.

Tad late with this stu, but i did make it to this event, and was impressed with the engines on display, and the hospitality. Ok, so moving on, I will be taking the ruston head to a local engine co., needs a valve seat recut and guides need sleiving, so all will be done ready for painting, including valves cut and fitted. bit of play here and there, so this work will sort it out. I am also working on hopper and crank guard, have flatted as best i could, treated with cu rust, and brush painted both with 3 coats of primer u/coat. I am in the process of using celulose putty to fill odd blemishes, then i will flat it down, and give it 1 more coat of u/coat, and 2 coats of gloss. In the paraphnalia i have obtained, it was originally varnished all over, but i don't think us'll be doing that. cheers david

Sounds like your heading in the right direction, you have plenty to do but sounds as if you've got it all sorted on what's what, and what your doing next.
Have you done anything with the trailer or is the weather again'st you.

Great work keep it up,

Stu.

As for trailor, no more done as yet cos it out side and it needs to be dry, and a tad warmer to do any welding on it. I have it all planned out what i'm doing with it, just need a few good days, weather wise. I still have the trailor that i purchased from up your neck of the woods. It needs some attention, but i am able to use it. I will have to store the plowmate on it for a while, then i will sort it ready for my showing this season. cheers david

Here are a few images of ongoing tasks. As you can see, I have found a nice green colour, not original, but i think the engine will look good with this colour. I did not like the dark bronze green it was originally painted in, as you can see me burning some of it off. Grey trailor has not been touched since the spring of last year, due to the weather, etc,, Cage trailor is housing the plowmate that i rescued from the scrapman. Hopefully i can get this up and running for the autumn ploughing matches. cheers David.
