Lister A and H3 pump
Well after final getting the cylinder back from the engine shop after a expensive valve seat grind and valve reface i lapped in the valves and have reassembled and now have some compression have done all the settings as per the manual and still can't get her to run
i do get fuel running out of the governor throttle plate when trying to start her
I saw somewhere about the return from the carb must be set but can't find any more information on setting up the carb any help please

Re: Lister A and H3 pump
There are no settings for the carburettor, what state is the needle point, if the governor plate is leaking fuel you've opened the needle valve to much or the needle is badly worn, max 1.5 turns and the choke 3/4 closed, once started turn the fuel valve down until the engine runs even, only open the choke if running a load.

Re: Lister A and H3 pump
I'll compare it to my Lister B this afternoon, it looks to have a groove in it from the picture which shouldn't be there.

Re: Lister A and H3 pump
The governor weights will be slack on the flywheel when not running, when the engine starts the throttle plate will be fully open but as the engine speeds up the weights will fly out and via the connecting rods will close the throttle until the adjustable spring hold it in balance, the looser the spring the slower the engine will run, off load it wont make a lot of difference.
Can you check the following, looking at the valve stems rotate the flywheel clockwise record the movement of the valves i.e. inlet valve rises and then falls then compression followed by the exhaust rising then falling and so on.

Also how do you know the magneto is anti clockwise, the more I look at your engine the more I think the mag should run clockwise.
Hold that thought I'm having a senior moment, on the back of the magneto, gear side, there will be an arrow, looking at the gear which way does the arrow go.

Re: Lister A and H3 pump
With the tap shut note the position, then open the tap so that start is now in the same place as the stop, when it fires turn the tap back to normal or where ever the engine runs even. Over time this will be second nature.
