Stuart Turner A4E14 Resto
Bought in decent order from Mike Milestone.
Here we go
An exploded diagram I found
My example
Typical condition I imagine
Since finding the diagram I observed that the conrod is upside down here and should have the oil holes to the top.

Re: Stuart Turner A4E14 Resto
The rebuild
The oil gallery white paint refreshed with appliance white that I buy from Halfords
The stand stripped and primed and the window frame cleaned ready to make a new glazing panel.
For this I've used 2mm thick plexiglass that is very strong and resilient. I had stock of this from my most recent model ship build.
I intend to sandwich this between two thin flexoid gaskets
Picture just to see the effect.

Re: Stuart Turner A4E14 Resto
The only part I have missing is the oil filler cap part no.67 I found a whisky bottle cap does as well
The cups are rubber and severely scored from lime scale in the bare steel bore. I've scraped the bore clean and ordered 1.5" leather cups.
My paint arrived, cover your eyes!
I re tapped the 1/8 NPT27 threads of the three functional drain points
I'm waiting for gasket material so assembly is just temporary.

Re: Stuart Turner A4E14 Resto
Today I made new gaskets using 2mm at the wet end and 0.25mm for the drive end.
I will photocopy these for SEP to make a kit.

I would have thought that Stuart Turner would have used BSP (28 tpi) rather than NPT ?

Re: Stuart Turner A4E14 Resto
If that were the case the tap would not screw in, I only cleaned the existing threads. The resulting thread if wrong would prevent the brass bolts screwing in

Gasket profiles sent to SEP
Oil tight
I'm still waiting for 1.5" leather cups

Re: Stuart Turner A4E14 Resto
Thinking ahead all my engines are 1.5" shaft so I've ordered a taper lock bush to carry the timing belt pulley that should give around 200rpm, more than enough for display.
There's enough length on the crankshaft here to enable both pumps together, creating a wider presentation.

Only the plumbing and a water vessel remains to be done. No wheels on this so it should stay put on grass.

Re: Stuart Turner A4E14 Resto
To the plumbing!
I've used an old IKEA table and shortened the legs. This has been used to restore 3 engines previously so its very strong.
A hole drilled to accept a push fit tank connector.
Modified so the pipe can slide up and down.
I've ordered a 45 litre round multi tub from Amazon to sit on the table
You'll have to imagine the tank for now.

Thanks Steve, I just had to break away from all the shades of green. It can always be repainted when it's really really old

Re: Stuart Turner A4E14 Resto
It seems a fraction of 1 thread difference over the length of the bolts is not detrimental either way.
I've realised that my modified tank connector is better upside down, this way it can stay on the pipe and the tank can be attached/detached by the locknut instead. As the connector now allows the pipe to slide through it compensates for uneven ground.
Support clip added for outlet pipe
The full display will require 2.8metres
Awaiting arrival of the taper lock timing pulley as Bearing boys sent a pilot bore pulley by mistake

Re: Stuart Turner A4E14 Resto
Good thinking with regard to the connector, it all makes sense. Everything is looking very smart in there, when your museum is opened, will you be charging admission or do forum members get free entry?!
Seriously good work.
Neil.

Re: Stuart Turner A4E14 Resto
Thank you Alan
I think I may have the date wrong with early 1970’s
Graces guide has one pictured like mine with 1949
I can’t find any information or instruction books other than the exploded parts view at the beginning
