Gardner 1F gas hot tube
As promised here is my garner 1F hot tube gas engine.
Built a few years ago (on old forum) making quite a lot of it myself, crank (fabricated with bar and billet presses and welded together), flywheel was cast and machined by a friend (my lathe wasn’t big enough), hot tube assembly, oiler and various other bits.
Re-rebuilt at end of 2019 ready for 2020 rallying (we all know what happened there) and have made yet another crank (cast in steel in one piece this time), had another piston cast and machined that and had rebore.
Made new exhaust valve chest, big end bearings, main bearings, gear cover/guard (never had one of these), new splash guard also built onto a new steerable wooden trolley and made a lot of mega improvements.
Finished item
Old crank packed beside casting from that
Crank shafts being machined
Made jig ready to machine big end
Mounted and starting machining of big end
Key ways
Crank done
Old and new exhaust valve chest
New mains
Showing oil catcher oil guide on bearing
Crank in
Machining new big end shells
Made gear guard pattern
Casted
Guard on
New splash guard
New piston made alongside old jobby
Some general facing of flange faces
Finally the trolley

Beautiful work... I must admit it took me a while to get my head around the jig for machining the big end...

Re: Gardner 1F gas hot tube
As for making my big end bearings (mains for that matter as well) I've never made any jigs, up until now on the Bamford I'm now restoring I've made bearings from Bronze.mattblack wrote:Beautiful work... I must admit it took me a while to get my head around the jig for machining the big end...
I've made big end with a jig from Babbitt as a piece of bronze was going to cost a ridiculous amount, I have some old Babbitt bearings from engines I've worked on in the past to melt down and this was first time I've ever used Babbitt (quite chuffed as I've been wanting to try this for sometime now and finally got up courage (foot up rear I needed really)).
The next topic I post will be the 6hp Bamford so I'll show jig for big end on there.
