Lister D main bearing rumble
Hello fellows, I'd like to know what the type of main bearings are on a Lister D as I'm partly restoring one to running condition. When cranked there is a horrible rumble, I would expect it to be the main bearings and would like to know what type of bearing they are. Any photos would be greatly appreciated. I know it not a big end bearing issue.
I did have a good trail through the posts using the 'search' but got fed up looking after page 10
Many thanks.

They are just two ball races of different sizes, easy enough to change with the flywheel off and the complete crank assembly on the bench.

As Pete says easy once flywheel off, they are standard ball race sizes, when reassembling be careful of lining up the big end as you could damage it, the breakdown in a Lister D manual is a good help as well.

Re: Lister D main bearing rumble
OK thanks for the info. I can't say I'm looking forward to pulling first of all the flat belt pulley and then the flywheel as there is a good show of rust around the shaft, pulley & key.
Are the crank main bearings a commonly used type & readily available ?
On another matter I guess I have an early engine??? as the fuel tank supports (unfortunately broken) are cast iron angle brackets, the magneto is direct drive (not chain and sprockets) and the fuel tank is smaller than the other Listed D's I have lying around.
Thanks again.

Polish the shaft and de burr the keyway before pulling the pulley off, then do the same where the pulley sat, remove the key and without damaging the shaft, do not use Stilsons, try and rock the flywheel to break the sticktion and then whilst rocking the flywheel pull it slowly off the shaft.
Yes you do have an earlier D, still common though, I have two.

Re: Lister D main bearing rumble
Happy to report that the flat belt pulley and flywheel were a total doddle to remove so now I'm looking for a very cheap supplier for RSL12 and RSL14 ball bearings for the crank.
Considering the fact that the value of the two ball bearings that's required will probably be more than the finished value of the engine the replacement bearings will need to be low cost.
I guess good old eBay will come up with what I require.
Any pointers to a source of inexpensive bearings will be much appreciated.

Dont buy on Ebay, you wont know what your getting, others seem to use Bearing boys for their bearings. Well done for getting it all off the Flywheel can sometimes be a Bar Steward. What are the sizes, the bearing No's dont show on internet.

Another recommendation for Bearing Boys, I've been using them for years, your bearings would be £37.20 inc vat from them.

That's me trying to use my dodgy memory again .
The correct bearing No's are RLS12 and RLS14.
Thanks again fellows for your supplier recommendations. I'll most likely go with the Bearing Boys right enough.

I just put RLS12 & RLS14 into the search box, just realised the wrong codes were originally posted but my brain just transposed the letters to RLS as they were familiar

Stuart, I wish my brain worked like that
Both bearings now on order from the 'Bearing Boys'.
Currently on with sprucing up the parts removed.

Me too but then I do work for a bearing distributor, or did - been furloughed since March and wondering if I actually have a job to go back to.

Re: Lister D main bearing rumble
Terrible situation with this covid 19, all of us effected one way or another. Goodness knows when we will ever be able to enjoy participating with our engines and other hobby interests with other likeminded people face to face..... I know I'm getting off track here, apologies.
Thanks everyone for your help.
I've all the crankshaft associated parts cleaned up and now await the bearing arriving the next job in line will be sorting out a mag, I think I have one somewhere in the workshop.
