Villiers MK15 carb issue Empty Villiers MK15 carb issue

Post by Marinlands Wed Jun 03 2020, 00:21

Hello,
New to the forum and to these engines. Looking for some advice. I have a MK 15/2 Villiers with a B10/2 Carburettor. I am not getting fuel to the combustion chamber. I am getting fuel to the float bowl. Engine started briefly on starting fluid introduced into the spark plug hole. Any advice on possible issues? Thanks in advance.

I will look into the jet theory. Not sure about the stuck float as there is gas in the float bowl.

I would strip the carb and give it a good clean out and blow all the jets through. Also check that the little gauze filter on the banjo bolt is clear. The air bleed (mixture) screw should be screwed right in and then out 2 turns to set the mixture to get the engine running.

I have a manual in PDF form that covers the MK15/1 and the B10/1 carb, TBH I'm not sure what the differences are on the later engines and carbs. If you PM me your email I'll drop you a copy if it's of use to you.

Thanks for all the advice. This weekend I will tear down the carb once again and look for blockages or other signs of trouble.

Well I have an update. Still can’t get the engine to fire. I have been through the carb. Could not find any real issues. The mesh filter at the banjo bolt looks fine. I adjusted the pilot adjuster screw per the manual. I tried to make it fire with starting fluid but no go. I adjusted the valves and the contact breaker point gap. The starter rope I am using wraps around the pulley four times. I get two sparks from the plug but they look weak. Is my magneto bad? Do they go weak before they die or just stop working all together?

Could be that the HT winding is open circuit and that the spark is jumping the internal gap. So, you will see a spark in air but it will fail when under compression.
Definitely time to get the multimeter out. Magneto HT winding should be approx 4 - 5 K omhs.

A magneto can go weak and eventually fail, I've picked this post up late but if it wont start on the devils breath then the magneto is the problem, if youve got a week spark outside the engine then it may not spark at all under compression. Is there a suppressor thats gone faulty or is it part of the coil.

Did you clean the contact faces of the points when you set them.?

It sounds like the coil could be suspect, it's common on old Villiers engines. Does it look like someone's had the engine apart in the past? I'm just wondering if they haven't set the timing if they've had the flywheel off.

Looks pristine in there. Don’t think there are many hours on the engine. I will have some help from a friend who is due to visit in about two weeks. Will have an update then and will share. Thanks for all the advice.

Throttle flap stuck shut if not used for some time , due to governor linkage being stuck in tickover position , just check it,s freed up & has the outside spring on . Also have you checked the carb body is sealing together , not bowed or a gasket missing allowing air in above the carb ? Wild guess .
