J.W.Brooke 4A marine engine
These show the L2333 of 1925 before and during strip down, and finally assembly. A lot of seized stuff, which is always a struggle but with patience I got there.
The rings were tricky but now they are freed off compression is great. had a lot of studs to replace, repairs etc
The colour shown isn't what it really looks like( much more of a grass/lawnmower green!

Sorry haven't been able to run as the magneto requires a rebuild(?) to get it sparking. Tried all the usual stuff but without success.

Very nice, and unusual too. What's the purpose of the 3-way tap in the coolant(?) pipe? Something to do with a water cooled exhaust?

Re: J.W.Brooke 4A marine engine
I had a small Brooke Marine waterpump many years ago that I ran with a JAP 2a engine. I wrote to Mr Brooke at Tettenhall and he sent me a lot of paperwork with the company history etc.

Re: J.W.Brooke 4A marine engine
John Brooke is alive and well. Had his 90th birthday last year!
The three way cock is so that you can run the engine at optimum temperature. The excess water going overboard, or straight into the exhaust
Can anyone recommend a good magneto rebuilder?
I know it won't be cheap!

Either Martin Percy at Wellingborough or Bob Lester in Cheshire, I have used both and can recommend them 100%. Both are on facebook if you use that.

I've had magneto's done by both, I've known them both for more years than I can remember, I tend to use Martin as he is local to me.

Bosch ZE1 turned out to be shot. The inside had suffered badly from water ingress.( probably because it had been jet washed before I heard about it? Will look for a replacement or equivalent

Sadly John Brooke died last year. Couldn't attend funeral( covid restrictions etc).
My magneto has been replaced( Not ZR1). It sparks beautifully when you spin it with your fingers, but won't spark when installed on engine, and hand cranked to try and start it. Must try and find ZR1 or equivalent, which work well on my other hand cranked engines

Sorry to hear of John's passing, a decent age though. I have a Ruston PT that doesn't like magnetos, whatever mag you fit on it you can't see a spark but if you pencil the sparkplug with graphite it will fire up and run all day. The magnetos have all been overhauled and work fine on other engines, I have tried earth leads and various other things but the PT just seems to reject ignition systems!
