Re: Another Norman T300
Oooh i never took that nut off, i loosened the one on the magneto itself so i could turn from the points end then remove the magneto and nip it back up. Just had a thought, im in liquorice central too do you want to come look at mine in the flesh (so to speak) or me to come and talk to you through how i did mine, whilst looking at it

Hi Mark,
That sounds like a plan! Will PM you later - mid week or weekends?

Re: Another Norman T300
Huge thanks to Mark (Sparkieb) for setting me on the path of righteousness.
So everything involved in ignition timing is keyed (see previous) except for the drive coupling itself which is a taper fit held by a set screw. What a faff!
Thanks again Mark for the offer of a visit. We must meet up for a beer when the weather brightens up.

Re: Another Norman T300
Well, flushed with success at getting the timing somewhere close I thought I'd give it a test. Squirt of petrol down the plug hole, plug back in and crank furiously. Nada! The spark is a bit wussy so I guess it's failing when under compression. Very disappointing.
Just as a matter of interest, as I haven't dismantled it, where is the condenser hidden? Also, how much magnetism should be apparent from the outside? Can't get a screwdriver to stick.

Re: Another Norman T300
Well, following advice from Jeff at TJ Magnetos' I'm pretty sure magneto is deceased. Twin magnetos seem to command serious money on ebay - motor bike lads I guess - so it's looking like going for 'Spares or Repair' . Needs serious thought.

Re: Another Norman T300
Yes, that happens, Norman T300 engines can get bought for their BTH magnetos by the motor bike lads.
The condenser is on the rotating shaft, next to the coil.
If you are thinking of a mag rebuild, take the rotor out and get an estimate for just a rotor rewind and condenser replacement. Don't forget to put something iron inside the rotor hole to maintain magnetism.

Re: Another Norman T300
Other magneto rewinders are available, so maybe shop around, however specialist work like this is never going to be cheap.

Re: Another Norman T300
Interesting, especially the mention of a manual.
Have just obtained a T300 and am looking for any manuals / diagrams etc, before I start take it appart?
Thanks

Hi NIJ
What Mark have you got? I may be able to help with manual. PM me if interested. Word of warning before starting dismantling - I understand some special tools are required to take it apart and reassemble safely. No doubt other members will be able to shed a bit more light.

Click on the little box marked 'MP' under Woodsman's details on the right of his post.
(don't ask me why it's 'MP' and not 'PM'...)
