been working on the guard for the planer ..............
still needs a clamp screw on the top and the stem welded on the bottom plus a bit of paint.............
balanced it on the stem to see the effect ..............should look a bit like this when finished
also made a wooden "pusher" to keep my hands away from the cutters.......
eventually i want it to look like this at shows

Re: 15.24cm wood planer restoration
thanks guys, Its always appreciated after a long hard restoration, I had intended to remove the wheels while in use to keep it static but considered the use of blocks to save time removing the wheels
these might work

Fingers crossed that the blocks work, you'll maybe need to rachet strap it down also to stop any movement whilst in use.

Re: 15.24cm wood planer restoration
well i put it on the blocks to see if they were high enough.................. looks ok to me
also been using the big bandsaw in the workshop to make some wheel chocks to stop things rolling in the trailer if the straps are not positioned right........................my Petter moved on the way home last time
been painting names on the bottoms so i don't get them mixed up
if the weather is not too bad i have another show on sunday
hoping to get a big pulley soon to crank the cutters up to 4000+ rpm

Glad you manage to sort some blocks for the planner, hope you get the new pulley soon to see if that will sort it out.

Re: 15.24cm wood planer restoration
The idea of running it from the National engine looks to be a non starter at least for now as there is no drive shaft, the pulley bolts directly to the flywheel so cannot be changed for a bigger one.
Maybe at a later date when i have it running correctly i can run it from the flywheel?
In the meantime the plan is to run it from the Petter A1 at least to test it, with that in mind i have just had delivered a new pulley, some key steel and a new drive belt. I have painted the spokes red as a reminder that it is a dangerous rotating part.
I used the speed of the old electric motor (1440 rpm) and the motor pulley (6 1\4") to calculate the driven speed was 3000rpm.
The new pulley is 11.22" and the Petter tests at around 800 rpm with my smiths test meter no the resulting speed should also be around 3000 rpm.
The new guard i made has been painted and fitted.
so hopefully everything is ready for a test run once the 6" pulley is removed and the new one fitted.

Re: 15.24cm wood planer restoration
been making a key to hold the pulley on the shaft, had to remove a little over 0.150" from one side to get it to fit.
now were cooking with gas
the cutter seems a little slow, not a bad thing if its going to run all day at a rally.
with a slow feed in the result is not bad
celebrating with a drop of the old falling down stuff

Re: 15.24cm wood planer restoration
All good Neville, what a bargin that wood planner was, I know it's cost a few quid to get in into it's present condition but well worth it, it works great, maybe a little slow but not to bad, next step would be to belt it around the flywheel.
Great project, well done mate,
