Moved from the Ebay / SmokStak section

Many thanks to Stu for pointing this out to me on eBay............ Very Happy

i bid £30 quid for it and no one else wanted it ................so i guess i just bought a planer ..............well its something different for an engine to run Very Happy

============================================================================

collected the wood planer today, looks a nice little machine.

i will remove it from the bench and scrap that and the electric motor.

the planer will get striped and cleaned, the working surfaces will get sanded and wiped with an oily rag, the rest will be painted........probably mid or dark grey and a new stand made for it.

the pulley is both flat and V so i could use either to run it, the cutter turns freely but i haven't checked the bearings for play yet.............oh and the guard is missing so i need to make a new one for it.

it will have to sit in the queue of jobs waiting to be done for a while though until i have got some of the other stuff running. Rolling Eyes

stationary stu wrote:It looks to be a good buy, if it was closer I would of bid on it. You don't see many of them on the rally field and practical as well but I don't know how you'd go about getting the blade sharpened.

Stu.

Stu we have 2 planers in the workshop i'm sure the boss will know where to get them done.

==============================================================================

started the strip down in my spare time between other jobs

15.24cm  wood planer restoration P1270630

cleaned up a couple of bits for painting

=============================================================================

stationary stu wrote:Good to see you 've made a srart with the planner. Hows the rest of it looking Neville?

Stu.

=============================================================================

most of it is there in the pics, the stand will be scrapped except for the cast top which i will re-use

15.24cm  wood planer restoration P1270635

==============================================================================

stationary stu wrote:Are the bearing all ok? and have you had time to think about making a guard for it yet?

Stu.

the bearings "feel" ok but i have not seen them yet...............the guard will probably be the last job as i need to build a stand first as its too heavy to lift in one piece, so will have to be rebuilt on top of the stand.

before that i need to get an engine running properly for my first show in 2 weeks time, and there is still some urgent work to do on the farm when the weather dries up a bit.

the only other work this will get for a while will be more stripping and painting in the evenings and weekends at home.

=============================================================================

work is progressing on this project which i hope will be powered by the 1935 National engine.......................still painting bits and stripping down the last few bits

15.24cm  wood planer restoration P1270690

i'm using 2 of the handles when i build the new trolley for it, the top cast bit has been removed from the rotten wood stand ready to go to the shot blaster......................

15.24cm  wood planer restoration P1270691

the cutter assembly is being stripped and the base cleaned up for painting...............

15.24cm  wood planer restoration P1270692

15.24cm  wood planer restoration P1270693

the rebuild will have to wait until i build a trolley to stand it on as its too heavy to lift on in one piece, still it will allow time for the paint to harden off in the warmth of the spare bedroom.

=============================================================================

stationary stu wrote:Sounds like you've got it all planned Neville, it should look good when all finished and a very interesting rally exhibit.

Stu,

=============================================================================

cleaned up the main base casting yesterday, it has a mould fault where the sand collapsed a bit during pouring............. as its only cosmetic they still used the casting.
i want it to look a little better than it does but not perfect so I'm using it to experiment with filler for the first time in years, the object being to restore the shape a little without spoiling the cast look after its painted ...............so no wet and dry just a rough shaping with 60 grit when its hardened then paint it.

hopefully it will look like it was never filled.

finished repair with a coat of primer, reasonably happy with the way it looks.

Thanks Guys, its an interesting project to do.

the bad weather is keeping us out of the fields at the moment and the 2 Sheppard huts are finished now so along with a long weekend painting its moving along a lot quicker than i expected.
I brought home a set of 4 cast wheels to paint today and bought 6 meters of wood for the trolley.

still need to take the cast trolley frame to the shot blasters though.

Working hard to get some sort of display together for this coming Sunday which will be my first ever show Shocked Shocked i got the Petter A1 running quite well today, will be trying to get a Lister domestic pump running off it tomorrow. Also been packing tool boxes oil cans petrol and all sorts of other things into crates ready to load the truck on Saturday afternoon.

Neville

Good luck with your first show, even tho I've been involved with engines for a few years I've not done many shows myself and tend to just go to the small shows as I think there more friendly. Once your there you'll soon get into the way of things and even if it's just the guys either side of you that you speak to there friends the next time your out.

It's even worse if you say your downsizing lol! lol! lol!

Neville you sure do a great job at this resoration lark I have to say. If you could pick bits up cheap at auction then after your work you magic you could make good money. Unless your like me and don't like to sell stuff once you've done all the hard work on it.
