Fingers crossed for you mate that you can pick up some parts at Enstone as they will be a bit cheaper. You've all winter to sort it out and get it perfect for next season.

Hello all , decided to have another bash at the IHC today as it needs many parts and one of the parts needed was a new or 2nd hand guvnor bob weight carrier as was damaged and im not risking welding that with centrifugal force that sounds it could be dangerous . So i have just bought one off ebay.com , just waiting for it to get here . But the problem was that the pulley was stuck on good and proper ! has alot of heat on there soaking for months now . In end i decided enough was enough and took the grinder to it and 6 discs later it was off

just cut the pully face off came off in a ring , then cut 2 slices opposite to each other that was just above the crank so the disc was horizontal , once the way cut a few taps with the chisel made a nice crack . Then got driven off from behind with a drift , Flywheel is off with guvnor bits .

that's all i can do for now until the bits arrive but have a few bits to assemble on the exhaust cam and rocker assembly . I did have the crankcase cover of the other side , scraped alot of the grease out as no oilers except the upper cylinder one . and had a good look at camshaft and gave it all a clean and replaced and re timed up .

Here are my efforts today ...



gave it a clean up too with a rag and some gt85 , just wanted to clean paint up and retain the original ish look without going to town with gear oil slapped over it .

Good to hear your making progress with the IHC and you've managed to track down the parts you need. Have you much more work to do before shes up and running? Will this be attending any shows this year?

stu I have only tracked down some of the parts, still a long list to get bit it's more like a engine to do bits as and when. most the other parts are available from hit and miss in USA. but going to cost a few 100 q once I get the parts shouldn't take that long to get running once got them .

fairly simple engine though.

the Fairbanks is mire priority to take out this season, as well getting another van lol

It's not to bad if you can get the parts as you say it's just digging deep into the pockets to get them.

while im waiting for some more bits to arrive from the states for another engine i have decided to pull my finger out and get on with this one ....

the guvnor that got from ebay.com took it apart and lubed it up and is now on the flywheel waiting to go onto the engine . just got to put a couple of the bolts in the crankcase that holds the bottom half of the main cup on the right side . Bolts go in through the crankcase and the only way is a inspection hole and the rear of the engine

bit of a tricky job and a pain when comes to tightening them up !

and i have made a list of parts also what i need , so il be sending off yet another order to US this one will be a fairly large box actually Be around £180 worth but got lots of bits like fuel tank , fuel pump , lots of fuel fittings too lots of small odds and ends too .

Have to wait and see what the vat/ duty will be on this one

I know stu its too bloody cold to be working outside as this engine is on the patio under a sheet . A job for the summer is to build a 7 x 10 storage shed just for the engines to go in . so wont be anything as solid as current one .

I need to paint these parts before putting on the engine , but i need to get a simular shade of green , well ish . I know this engine has been repainted in the past but not sure what colour would be a close ish match ...

How about John Deere green ? These parts will be behind the flywheels so not directly noticable . Opinions please .

take a chipping or part with the green on to your local diy agent ie B&Q or simalar to the dulux ici mixing part and they will get you a colour code for a close match , then see what you can get from else were stationary proof paint or car spayshop agent or simalar for a "masons 1k ct coach finish its a good finish and tough paint and easy on the wallet to the likes of craftmaster stationary engine paint that "peels at the smell of fuel "crap master more like lol

I agree kev craftmaster paint is crap .

1 paint that is good is blackfriers qd90 paint but shame they dont make more of a range .

Yeah Matt, don't use that Rustoleum. I know I've recommended it in the past, but I've since found some of it is less than petrol proof.

If you go to your local paint suppliers they will be able to match that paint for you (don't trust you eyes & a colour chart though, they rarely see eye to eye).

I recommend Bradite ME53 tractor enamels. They don't have this ultra high gloss finish that most modern paints have, so are more in tune with the originals. & they are able to mix it to any standard colour from the BS charts or the RAL ones.

Personally, if it were mine, I would re-paint the whole thing. I don't go much for "working clothes", never looks finished to me. But it's your engine, so take no notice of what I think. I only really came here to recommend the paint, it's called: Bradite ME53, Fastrac gloss Enamel. It's also very cheap, only about £12 a litre. Goes on well too. You'll have to ask for it though, as most of them don't keep it where you can see it (it's too cheap for the general public, they usually save it for their trade customers, but a bored & very chatty worker in my local paint suppliers let me into the secret of it's existence a few months back).

The only thing is that swindon doesnt have a paint specialist now as the one i used has moved to southampton ... So im stuffed for anyone in swindon .

I bet it does. I didn't realise there was any small independent paint suppliers round here but there's at least 2 in my town, & it's only a small town, nowhere near as big as Swindon. I thought I would have to go to Eastbourne (although that's not far from here, about 5-8 miles).

One's called "Trade Paints" the other is called "Decorators Warehouse", they may be franchise companies with a branch in your area?

I'll bet there's a small industrial estate somewhere around the town with a paint suppliers on it. Do you know any builders or painters & decorators? Try asking them. Not sure if a Brewers would be any good as I think they are tied to certain suppliers.

There might be other paints you could use, you really need to chat to a small supplier, they're bound to have other customers who restore tractors or old machinery. Time to get searching I reckon.

Nuts there is a couple of trade places but its genral household decorating like brewers in swindon as poped into a few of them before and they say the colour charts for household paints is different to enamel type paints

There is patrick edwards down the road who sells vintage tractor parts , i might take a part to them see if they might be able to match up ... But i have a feeling it may be light brunswick green

Oh and Nuts the idea is to just the engine running 1st and have a mess around with it for a while and enjoy it for a bit and sometime in the future i will paint it i think , but that may not be for a few years .

See you have already been there but they do supply Bradite Paints. That where I got the paint that Nutts is painting the 6PB from and for the record that is BS381c shade 276 Lincoln Green known in the trade simply as BS276 which is supposed to be what Ruston's used. That number isn't in the latest BS colour chart and yet Brewers were able to match it. I believe all Bradite Paint comes from Brewers Newbury Store so you have to order it. They should also have paint charts for you to look at although to be honest its best to try and get a code from a reliable source.

Thanks kev i have spoken to him about some of the parts allready . But its sods law that for months and months i wait and look around ebay and ebay.com and also engineadds on smokestak and there was nothing ... well nothing anyone wanted to post over here .... But i did get a complete guvnor from the states a few months back . In the end i said to myself sod it il buy new .... the parcell arrives and look what happens there the parts i needed not far from me

Well at least i know these parts are guarteed to be ok and not leak fuel and pump fine .
