JAP 2S ALCO genset
Folks,
I have just got an Alco 24-30V 21amp genset. It has the round sockets with 2 pin round holes which are different sizes. Does anyone know if/where I can get suitable plugs from please. Thanks in anticipation

Re: JAP 2S ALCO genset
Sounds like a 2-pin Niphan plug with unequal/odd pins.

Re: JAP 2S ALCO genset
I will post some pics but not tonight, they are on my phone but I cannot get them across to the PC . I have had problems with the internet and so TalkTalk have sent me a new router. Fitted it up when I got home tonight but there was a fault. I rang them and they have sent me the wrong one. They do not send this type of router out any more because it has a known fault!!!!!!. The plug is 30.5mm diameter and the pins are 6.5mm and 5.2mm

Re: JAP 2S ALCO genset
Thanks for uploading them Stuart. As you can see it has Niphan on the end caps and I have been in touch with LPA who own Niphan and their techy chap is getting in touch.

Re: JAP 2S ALCO genset
Need electrical help please.
I have tested 5 or 6 different plugs all of which I know work but I do not have a spark. When I turn the engine slowly over by hand I get a tingle from the HT lead which is uncomfortable but there is not the kick. I have not had the bottle to turn the flywheel quickly. I have tested the condenser (as per the Youtube videos) and that will take a charge and then slowly discharge it. There are 3 leads going to the top of the condenser and I have insulated all of them. I have continuity from the + to the casing of the condenser when the leads are connected but not if they are not. There appears to be good magnetism on the flywheelas it will hold a screw driver.
Thanks in anticipation

Have you a multimeter to test the resistance in the primary windings of the coil?

Re: JAP 2S ALCO genset
Yes sorry I forgot to mention it. With the Multimeter set at 20K Ohms I get a reading of 4.41 between the nipple and the horseshoe and also between the nipple and the back plate.

Re: JAP 2S ALCO genset
It it was me I'd check the wiring of the condenser and if in doubt try a replacement. Here is a image if you've not already found one.

Re: JAP 2S ALCO genset
Thanks for the advice Steve, tonight I have been in the shed, I put another condenser on, piggybacking it with the old one as there are 3 wires bolted on to the positive side of the existing one. One goes to the coil, one to the top of the points and the 3rd disappears behind the back plate. I still have the tingle but no spark. I am going to wait for a bit warmer day to have another go.

The 3rd probably goes to a cut out switch.

Re: JAP 2S ALCO genset
If you piggyback a good condensor with a duff one you will still have a duff one as the new one will leak the the other.

Re: JAP 2S ALCO genset
Gents,
Just a quick update. I took it to an old gent who has a long (70 odd years) experience with engines and it had him beat as well. I took it to an auto electrician who replaced the wire from the points to the condenser cleaned up the points and it now works a treat. The best guess is that there was a stray strand of wire that was shorting out. I had checked the wires but must have missed the strand. Just shows it doesn't take much for them not to work.
