End of year greetings fromScotland
Hello, I'm Edward; I live just east of Edinburgh in Scotland. By nature I'm a hoarder of things mechanical and like to tinker with them when the opportunity arises. Since retiring some years ago I've rebuilt/restored from the chassis up my Lotus 7 which I bought in 1970 and completed a similar exercise on my 1972 Triumph motorcycle which I acquired in 1976. My latest completed engine related project involved a motor cycle engine with piston rings severely seized in both the barrels and pistons.
My reason for applying to join this forum is that a current project is a small petrol engine generator set given to me by a neighbour some 20 years ago (repayment as he had borrowed my cement mixer to build a garage). From this forum and other sources I identified the unit as an ex MOD battery charger powered by a JAP 2a motor, and following instruction located the engine number to identify it as manufactured in 1943.
The unit looked moderately smart having been painted in an "all-over" thick coat of paint which seems to have kept most rust at bay; I had to remove the paint from the engine fan cover to read the engine number. My intention is to strip all the paint off and repaint it, cleaning up the bits that don't show at the same time and hopefully get it fully operational. Main missing parts seem to be the air filter and the silencer.
Initial test indicate the engine has low/no compression which I think is attributable to the valves and no spark which seems to be because of a faulty magneto coil (HT side is open circuit). I'm hoping that through this forum I can get advice where I need it and in particular advice on replacing or rewinding the magneto coil. When I get the engine running I can test the generator side; I suspect the control box will require attention and will possibly need advice in that area too.
Anyway, enough about me. I hope you have all had a good 2019 and will have an even better 2020.

Hi Edward and a very warm welcome to the forum.
Post a few pictures in New Projects/Restorations when you get going.
We visit Edinburgh at least once a year - a lovely place, especially as, being old giffers with train passes, we can travel first class on LNER for buttons.
Are you going into the city for Hogmanay ?
