Lister D Radiator and Fan conversion
Hi,
I have just bought a 1924 Lister D atatched to a sprayer pump. What I want to know is how easy is it to convert to radiator cooling or tank cooling, as I cannot find anything for any parts for sale for say the fan and bearing bracket or radiator etc.
Also the top plate for the head? I reckon I could make a new top plate with pipe fitting myself out of a fairly solid lump of steel plate shaped and weld a 1 inch pipe fitting into it etc., and am I right in thinking the bottom pipe is simply a 1 inch BSP threaded pipe that goes in place of the plug in the bottom?
Thanks
William

hi William...
yes you can do it,all you need is the tank, brackets, pipe work and the hopper cover...
but it wont be original, and as its all on its original trolley, wouldn't it be better to leave it original ?????
its up to you though.....
regards...mike....

hopper cover, pipes etc.
Okay, thanks for that. I see you point about originality given it is 1924 and its all completely original...

It wont be 1924 either as the first D type was manufactured in November 1926.

Hi, Yes, I must admit it was at 11pm last night after 5 cans of pop that I checked the little brass plate, and I did not know that a Lister D existed until about 7pm last night,
I was told it was 19 twenties something and I need to look at the numbers on it again etc etc.

I bought it through word of mouth, and not from ebay, whether the person had put it on ebay I do not know, similarly, he did not mention it had been on ebay.

Re: Lister D Radiator and Fan conversion
Thats a very nice set with original Lister ironwork etc, a lovely project.
To find the parts for rad cooling won't be easy, and converting to tank cooling means the hassles associated with a large cooling tank. If it were mine I would leave it as is, give the set a good service/overhaul and get it up and running and show it in its 'working clothes'... (although it might have been repainted in the past as the green is a bit light for mid brunswick, but that could just be weathering....?)
Plenty of advice on this forum if you get stuck....
Cheers
Dave

serial number
I have got the serial number of it, and also it appears the matching plate is on the trolley, ie it is the original trolley from when built.
The serial number is 192413
and the spec is 26D2H

Re: Lister D Radiator and Fan conversion
Hi,
Probably 1945 ish.
Spec will be 26DH basically spec 26 and Hopper cooled. DWE's book details the spec 26 engines.
Not heard of 26D2H, what horsepower and RPM is on the engine plate ? I have seen later engines with spec DH2, DH3 etc and that basically means the year 1952, 1953 etc but yours is earlier.
It is nice that the plate is on the trolley, not often you get original plant remaining together after all these years.
Cheers
Dave

Re: Lister D Radiator and Fan conversion
Thanks for the pics, that explains it (I did wonder if it was a 2HP engine, hence the 2 in the spec plate) must be uprated for the pump duty.
Nice that the engine number ties up to the plant plate.
DWE should be able to date it accurately for you, send him a couple of pics and details of the plant number as well. Invest in the Lister D books, you won't be disappointed http://www.stationaryenginebooks.co.uk/

Re: Lister D Radiator and Fan conversion
Dave does the new book have all the numbers in for dating engines and the correct way of finding out all the details on engines manufactured on/after 1950. I might get myself a copy if it shows the easy way to date them as I get confused easy with them now

Hi Stu,
Afraid I can't confirm as my Dad has the books at the moment and won't get them back for a week or so. We have the old book from the 80's (again worth a read) and also the latest one. I am fairly sure the old book has a dating list and the new one has more detailed info on the spec changes including ranges of engine numbers, but perhaps not a full dating list. Maybe someone else on here can confirm if they have the book to hand ?
Put them on your xmas list, you won't be disappointed !
Cheers
Dave
Re: Lister D Radiator and Fan conversion
David is correct in that the new book does not have the full dating list that the earlier issue's had. However it does list all the spec changes and the various modifications and special application engines and also the experimental rotary valve and diesel D types so is well worth purchasing for those item's alone. There are 55 pages and it is fully illustrated.

Re: Lister D Radiator and Fan conversion
Sounds like it could still be a good buy so I'll add it to my xmas list although there's already a few Lister books on there already Lister engines type H to R and the A-Z of stationary engines can't remember what else now.
