Hi from Suffolk
Hi, my name is Bill .
Joined this forum as a precaution in case my Lister D rebuild goes pear shaped. I have a reverse rotation Lister D from 1952, in very good condition with the exception of a couple of missing bits. I need to make a new valve cap (turned up on the lathe and mill) which will need hardening as one of them is missing one of its legs. Also need to make a new adjustable tie bar for the govenor linkage as it came with a bit of coat hanger doing the job. Exhaust needs fettling as it was originally used on a cement mixer with a pipe about 4 feet long. The trickiest job will be the fuel tank, looks like someone was using at as a
football, so many dents that I may go for replacement with a better example. Other than that I look forward to contributing where I can, I used to be an engineer before retirement so may have some useful experience to pass on.

Re: Hi from Suffolk
welcome Bill, be aware that the governor adjustable linkage has a lefthand thread at one end and a righthand thread on the other.

Thanks for the warning Maryalice, fortunately I do have a 4mm left hand tap and I can thread the male part on the lathe so should be able to make something suitable. Not too bothered at making it BSW as the rod is self contained and I don't have any LH whitworth taps and dies.
regards
Bill

Bill,
Try Tracy Tools, www.tracytools.com, they stock whitworth left handed taps and dies at good prices.

I never realised that. You learn something new every day.

Re: Hi from Suffolk
Well it is back together, the valve cap and govenor rod ends took a couple of hours to make. The exhaust has been chopped down but does not yet have a muffler. Tappet clearances and timing all set, I filled the float chamber with petrol after plugging the bottom inlet. Second swing and it burst into life, no jumping about or blowing back, no leaks, settled into a nice steady beat once the govenor and mixture was properly adjusted. Absolutely chuffed to bits, now to sort that tank and get a proper bit of fuel pipe. I'll do some pictures once I've sorted some wheels and moved it somewhere more photogenic. (I used some old plastic ones I had kicking about and the weight of the thing seems to have destroyed them quite well)
Regards
