Jap 2A with pump
Hi all, when it's too cold for the shed, then the smaller projects come inside.
Working on a Jap 2A I believe to be 1942, I have stripped it down to the crank and every thing looks good, so it's back together with new gaskets and it's getting ready for a new paint job.
No serial numbers on the engine, just on the shroud.

Re: Jap 2A with pump
Hi Keith and welcome to the forum.
Have a really close look at the tinware - shroud and tank. I have had a number of Villiers engines and the company that made the tinware, AJH, I believe also made the same for some JAP models. If you are lucky you may find a small (half inch) lozenge shaped stamped with the letters AJH and a year.
Good luck and please keep us posted with progress.

Re: Jap 2A with pump
I can not see anything else stamped, I have sanded it all down and primed the tinware, nothing on it other than the serial number.
I have not seen a single JAP with the logo on the side?

Thanks for the photo, it looks a very similar body, but different float bowl, hopefully I can spend a bit of time this weekend cleaning it up a bit to see if there are any markings.

Re: Jap 2A with pump
Amal always had the logo on the carb and I have carbs back to the early 40's, but I have not seen a villiers logos on any of my villiers carbs, so I think that's what you have, probably just has a model and jet number stamped on it.

It has it's similarity's, but the Zenith 13T has a choke a tickler and is a stub fit, whereas the Jap carb hasn't got any of that on this one.

The JAP carb was replaced with a Zenith in the late 1940's, the reason given was that it was unsuitable for horticultural machinery as it cut out/flooded if the machine was tilted. I had an early 2a with the JAP carb but sold it on a few years ago now.
