Lister A or B
have recently purchased a Lister A or B, being new to the hobby im not quite sure as yet, i have wrote to David Edgington with the serial number 274170, which i believe from a link on this forum is approx 1950, however there is another number on the hopper which is B209, does the B denote the model type ??, its also a 5hp 650rpm,
any help appreciated,
Geoff

Re: Lister A or B
Hi Geoff,
Welcome to the forum, going by the serial no it was a 1950 and the B209 is the part no for the hopper which would make it a B type,
Has it not got a spec plate on it in brass should read from left serial no then spec ie BB if its a 5HP then hp @ 650, if its a 5HP the spec is probably as I have put BB, hope this helps, David is changing computers or was from Sat so you may not hear from him for a few days.
Hope this helps. Regards Richard

Richard, many thanks for the reply, the only spec info i can see on the plate is 106-14-H 5HP 650RPM there is no recording of any other info such as BB, does this make sense and what does BB standard for as opposed to B,
anything appreciated,
Geoff

Re: Lister A or B
I'm afraid cannot help you any more on that spec only H normally stands for Hopper cooled, when they produced the 5hp engines they called them BB for some reason instead of the say for instance B56 the 5hp would be BB56, that's all I know you will have to wait for David for any more info, this is how my spec plate looks like. If it has an H on the spec plate and no mention of a B would it be an H?

Re: Lister A or B
106-14-H Means that it's a Type B engine produced to Spec 106/14 (Agricultural rather than Industrial) and H=Hopper cooled. A late production engine, circa 1950 seems about right.
Type BB is the higher speed version, 650rpm insted of 600rpm, but this type designation was only used internally at Listers as far as I know.

serial number 274170
Hi Geoff,
According to 'The Lister A & B Story' D W Edgington, under the heading 'A Rough guide to the engine dating by serial number'
Year 1950 the serial numbers were: 272800 - 274579 (May 1950)
I hope this may be of some assistance.
Pete
