Home Made Silencers

Has anyone out there made a silencer for a stationary engine,I fancy trying to make one for a Villiers MK20/25,has anyone got any suggestions and or ideas on this subject, ideally i would like to make it quieter than the Villiers pepper pot style,any thoughts on this appreciated.

If you go into youtube and search for eg 'how to make an engine silencer' - you should get some videos up which might give you some pointers.Theres a guy on there called 'Steamwally' - he has some good engine videos that are well worth watching.Hope that helps.

perforated steel pipe running through a well made 'can' packed with steel wool worked for a few lister D's of mine - the result was a few less decibels and a slightly different 'whump' when it fired... totally acceptable for me - and you can play with the length and width of the can and internal pipe 9and the size of holes on the internal pipe) - its a cheap solution - and if very skilled (which i am not) you can make the 'can' with one end that unscrews so you can replace the steel wool every few years if you're running a lot of hours...

it all depends on what you have hanging around or can get hold of...

or you can use you tube and hear a professional tell you a better trick or two as Kev rightly suggests

Hi, Hamish sounds like you have already made a successful silencer I will look in my bits and pieces box or go down the scrap yard and see what turns up and then as you say play around with design,Thanks for that.Best Regards Chiefy.

Hi when I/ve done this I use stainless steel pan scrubbers as these have a hole in the centre that will push firmly over the perforated steel centre pipe and are about the right size on the outside and the scrubbers last long time All the Best

Wilkinsons. tescos etc - a pack of 6 ss scrubbers for about a pound happy engine days! - its not often we can find a bargain in this hobby!

Hi Kev, I have sourced a lenth ( about 6" longx 3" dia)of steam pipe I now need to get some stainless steel pan scrubbers from Wilkos and some (1"diax7/8ths bore) steel tube for inlet&outlet pipe I have steel for end caps i will turn this on the lathe to a tight fit for both ends and then weld them, but it will have to wait a little longer as i am going up to nth Yorkshire for the Great Yorkshire Steam fair at Duncombe Park I will also visit relations while am there hoping this weather holds,Best Regards Keith.
