Drag saws have to be one of the most interesting uses for a stationary engine - and this looks great - the recip saw looks facinating - keep us informed of progress Squire!

Re: 1924 wade drag saw.
the cross head saw holder has been removed, it was seized to the guide rod.
the stroke arm and jack shaft sprocket have been removed and un seized.
next jobs are to make some new guide rods and clean the guide rod eccentric.
more to follow.

Re: 1924 wade drag saw.
a bit more today, the greasers have removed and been and cleaned, the guide rods have been measured and replacement steel ordered, the pitman rod and bearings have been removed and cleaned. Replacement magneto found, waiting for it to arrive, this will need a lot of work to get it working again but at least its complete and the correct one. Next job is to remove the jack shaft sprockets for the saw motion and clean them. then its time to find some hens teeth, the saw is missing its drive chain.

There were 3 or 4 Wico EK mags at the Oakley swap meet event.
Send an email to US Tractors in Saffron Walden, they had 2 EK's on their stall.

Hi Richard,
What a fascinating project.Do you intend to show it or use it? I saw (sorry!) a similar one being used at a rally last year and it certainly got a lot of interest.
By the way a good set of photos there .
All the best,
Kev.

hello kev.
the first plan is to get it running, then show just the engine to start with. I still need to find a drive chain so that the saw and the engine can run correctly, second job after that is to remake the whole wooden frame as it was rotten and un usable.

a new babbitt bearing
had a go at pouring a new Babbitt bearing today. I have never tried it before, after a couple of dummy runs the bearing poured well.

I like the bearing. I had a go at bearing pouring a few years ago, i had to make some bearings for a 5hp Petter junior. What size chain does the saw need?

hello bob.
still not sure of the size required, i still need to do a bit of research into how to measure the sprockets to get a chain to match.

Re: 1924 wade drag saw.
I think most chains go by circular pitch, ie the distance from one tooth to the next. and the width (thickness) of the sprockets. Sometimes they skip every second tooth on the wheel (larger sprocket) , so check on the pinion (smaller sprocket) too.
Is that one of the agricultural chains that look like the links are pressed out of thick sheet? If so, they need to run the right direction. As they are not roller chains, in one direction the part of the link that contacts the sprocket tooth "rolls" in and out of contact without load.
Cheers
Darryl

still at it.
still working on the wade, the magneto is proving to be a problem. the coils are completely rotted and totally un useable, starting to think about battery and coil ignition. thinking of a small motorbike coil and trying to fit it in the magneto in place of the original coils, and using a small mobility scooter battery hidden under the water/fuel tank, and still trying to find a chain.

Re: 1924 wade drag saw.
battery and coil now fitted, I've run the engine for the first today and it ran well. next step will be a trolley, cooling tank and battery box. I think I will try to hide it all under the tank.
anyone got any better ideas for hiding it?.

Hi Richard,
That looks really good. When you think what it looked like when you got it a short while ago the transformation is a credit to you.
By the way any luck with the chain yet?
All the best,
Kev.

Re: 1924 wade drag saw.
still not found a chain, trying to make contact with other drag saw owners in America, the people at wade have been very helpful with dates and information but can't give me any details on the chain. I am currently concentrating on getting the engine running without the saw motion, hence the smaller trolley. next job is the cooling tank.

temporary coolin tank
hello everyone,
I have fitted a temporary cooling tank so I can set the carb with the engine running, the carb has no float so it will be a bit of trial and error.
trying to get the engine running for a show in September, no drag saw attachments with it, just the engine. still no luck finding information on the chain, still trying to make contact with wade drag saw owners in America.

Re: 1924 wade drag saw.
Also just found this on Smokstak
....HASTINGS MANUFACTURING COMPANY in Michigan. All you have to do is give them the dimentions of the ring. Their engineer Doren will guide you through the process of ordering and the specs she needs. Her email address is: dhill@ hastingsmfg.com
not sure if they can help with the chain but they may have more tech info to share or know someone who does...
