Lister D - Carb Problems
My Lister D type had poor compression, and after a long run it's really good now. But I have now encountered some strange problems with the carb. Whenever I'm running it and I want to speed it up, the engine cuts out. There is also a large build up of petrol and it comes rushing out when I push the sprung loaded choke open. The Mix control also seems to be useless when I want a rich mixture or if I want to stop the engine.
Should I get a new carb? Is the problem simple to fix?
Thanks
Ally

Re: Lister D - Carb Problems
try turning the mixture dial round one more turn, then check the valve that the float is attached to, if that is corroded then it will allow fuel to keep on flowing through even when the bowl is full.

Re: Lister D - Carb Problems
If the float is hollow brass or steel they can sometimes leak and part fill with petrol. Result is the fuel level is too high.
To check take the float out and shake it near your ear, can you hear or feel fuel sloshing around inside it, it is leaking. Repair is replace or somehow get the fuel out then plug the hole. Remember if it has a trace of fuel in it, it is a little bomb, so don't use a flame based soldering iron etc.

Re: Lister D - Carb Problems
Ally, You need to slacken off the air valve at the front of your carb. Easiest way to do it is......take off the three screws or nuts that hold on the brass valve retainer and put in a shorter spring or cut the spring that is in there.
It sounds to me that the engine has too much choke...over fuelling. Not tonight though or you will be blown away!!!
Billy.
