G'day!!

Picked up another old kick/pedal start engine today.

No sign of any identifying marks/brands/numbers anywhere - but maybe something will turn up when I give it a clean.

I can't tell you anything about it other than the guy I got it off said he thinks his dad has had it stashed in his shed since the 50's - and I'm in Australia, so perhaps its an Aussie made something or other.

Looks Like a Briggs & Stratton engine to me.
Possibly a type Z or type ZZ.
Its missing the cooling cowl in the pictures.

I've had a few votes for Briggs and Stratton - but many disagree on the mode - one guy suggested a Model A, and I accept your suggestion of a Z or ZZ with thanks Smile

I will do a bit of homework and try and dig up some photos of al three the A, the Z and the ZZ and see what I can come up with.

And yes - it does look like the cowl is missing - I seem to be missing cowls on most of my engines - so if anyone knows where I can get a cowl for this engine, or one for a J.A.P.Model 6 - I'd love to hear.....

Ah, Matt's link works!  It is a Briggs Model A the same as my old one which I recently restored and sold.  Clues are that the front main bearing plate is not detachable and I bet the carb has no choke butterfly as they had a remote inlet tube and air cleaner with the choke butterfly incorporated.  Kick start A's are quite rare even in the USA, mine had no drillings in the crankcase for a fuel tank bracket as a lot were fitted inside Army Tanks and ran off of the tanks main fuel supply.  Mine had JAP 2A tank fitted!

Where is the Engine Number located??

I have had a quick look but haven't been able to find it. It pretty dirty though, maybe I just need to clean the right area Smile

Alas the only numbers on a Briggs are on the shroud that is missing on yours, the tag can be seen in the pic below of my old Model I that I used to own.  Yours is an A though, if the cylinder head is alloy then it will be an AL.  The Model B is about half as big again as an A, and the Z and ZZ are huge and have removable cylinder barrels.  There is normally a date code on the magneto backplate which can only be seen when dismantled, I would date yours as a WW2 period engine probably ex Military.

Thanks for all of your input so far - I like the idea of it being a WWII ex-military engine - I can see it painted up in Olive Green already Smile

Real bummer - without the cowl/engine cover, I've got no hope of really getting to the bottom of it I guess.

One further clue - I haven't been able to get a look at the back of the magneto but I did find this little plate on the bottom of the crank case.

Its a little screw on plate with two tiny screws, one at each end. It's only about 3/4 inch long, and bears the numbers "13-0" and that's it - see the photo.

Does this give anyone any more clues?

Yes, that's a casting number for that part of the engine. No help in dating I'm afraid.
