Re: Lister Dating
Stu's site is very good, if that fails ive been digging and the best way to get hold of David is by post, if you post him engine details you will have a signed letter back from either him or his wife address to follow

David Eddington's Lister Dating
Write a letter with your serial numbers and engine details and you should get a letter back with the year your engine was made and maybe some history

Re: Lister Dating
Just to keep you up to date I wrote a letter to David to get the date etc for my engine. I posted the letter on Saturday and the reply came back today Tuesday, can't get much faster then that, so this is the best option to contact him.
So my Lister J type was built 12/12/1926 and supplied to a company about 3 miles from where David lives. Company name was Reeves of Bratton, Wilts anyone know anything about this company?

Re: Lister Dating
Chris, All that David's letter said was Reeves Of Bratton were in business until sometime in the 1960's and took many Lister engines. Nothing to indicate the business they were in or what the engines were used for.

LISTER D POST 1945 ENGINES AND DATING......
if your engine number begins with 1/ or has a number with less than five figures, it was built after 11/3/1946.
because at that time engine numbers had reached 199999 and the decision was made to introduce a shorter numbering scheme starting with 1/1000. this system continued until DECEMBER 1951 by which time engine numbers had reached 1/77820.
At this juncture a further change was introduced because from 1952 onwards every engine number began with 1 at the start of each year and to avoid any confusion the SPEC.number was arranged to give the year of manufacture of each engine.
So for example DH2 was manufactured in 1952,DH3 in 1953, DH4 in 1954, DH10 in 1960 etc. hence an engine bearing the following number-281 DH5 was manufactured in 1955.
The majority of engines built from JUNE 1948 onwards were built at WROUGHTON,near SWINDON, production continued until about 1964.
Fortunately a little more information has been made available and enables the previously produced dating guide to be extended to 1958.
a final point concerning the reading of SPEC numbers on the later engines.
Instead of DH3..you might see DR3 or DZ3, so to avoid any confusion this small list may help our forum members in the future
SPEC...DR= R means radiator cooling.....
SPEC...DZ= Z indicates REVERSE rotation..however to add to the confusion..R was often used on earlier engines...
SPEC...DK= the K Stands for kerosene......
SPEC...DH= H..of course meaning hopper cooled......
SPEC...D2= sometimes used to determine output...IE..2hp.....
If your SPEC plate is missing from your engine you should be able to find the number stamped on the flywheel crown......
hope this helps some of our members....

I have recently purchased a Lister D type petrol engine, 2 HP, 1000 RPM, S/N 2814.
Would you be able to provide information on the approximate year of manufacture?
Thanks in anticipation

Re: Lister Dating
2814D2 is your serial number and spec number combined.
It is serial nr. 2814 and spec D2, and is built somewhere in the beginning of 1952.
