Hi all
How can I find out the correct rotation on my engine, I can not see any marks anywhere dictating which way.
I know it was built in 1939 and was used as a fuel pump for the RAF, it has a ML Lister mag but that is all the info I have..

Identify which valve is the exhaust, rotate the engine until it comes up to compression (both valves closed) and then continue turning. The exhaust valve SHOULD begin opening after approximately half a turn of the flywheel if you are going in the correct direction, when that closes again then the inlet valve will start to open around Top Dead Center. If this doesn't happen then you are turning the wrong way! Very Happy

Thanks for that info, I can not send pic yet as I am a new member and am not sure how to do it, plus the engine is in pieces being painted at present, I just want to know for the re-build.

On a reverse (clockwise) rotation the carb is above the mag, on a standard (anti clock) rotation the carb is above the fuel tank ! you look at the side that puts the mag nearest you and to the right !

heres my old reverse rotation  spec plate reads A27"C" for  Clockwise from valve side
i did pm you back about lister A info  over the weekend mate,but didnt here back

if its the same lister one as mine ,
just push the spring loaded pin outwards from the hole in other side and then just rotate it 180* and your swinging the other way, 
or some times you can put it on the guvernor/other end of crankshaft and then its the right way ,if crank still full length and no big key or pulley in the way

I am going to have a look to see if I can alter the handle I have, My engine does (or will) look similar to yours when built apart from the flame proof carb. The RAF requested all fuel bowsers to have them fitted.

its already been said rob mate ,
but if theres a big pulley on or a long key it wont fit or work safly
the times i put handle on the wrong side ,and then realised "weres the  fuel pump and valves gone"whoops wrong side for starting again  Smile

That's right; but once the war finished my engine was sent back to R A Lister and Co for reconditioning and resale, and it is thought the brass flame trap was probably taken off then.  I decided to keep it in its reconditioned 'civilian' state when I was restoring it, as it is part of the engine's history.   The Air Ministry spec 'A28s' engines were also fitted with a removable flat lid to prevent the water from spilling out of the hopper when the bowser was being towed around.  As with the flame trap, my engine lost the lid many years ago!

I am not sure if the lids are meant to be metal but I have a wooden lids in the box of bits (spares) I have. it has a piece in the middle that you could turn to keep it in place, but alas that piece is missing.
