As much as you can afford. You can buy cheap and spend loads on getting it right or you can spend the money on a GOOD one and save yourself a shed load of pain. A good 3hp tank cooled one with good bearings, all there unrestored could cost you £300-£400. A bucket of crap could cost £100 but then cost another £500 getting it running.

Deciding on what you would pay is one problem - finding a good one is your next issue.... but gives a great excuse for visiting all the rally’s 'just in case somebody is selling'
speaking for myself I would go for spending more on a good example as I don’t (yet) have all the workshop tools I'd like to restore some of the more challenging examples.... as Villiers says - a bargain may cost you in the long run - but if you're looking for a long term project then fill your boots!
Happy New Year by the way to all!

Hi Matth92 - I forgot to add - are you going to leave that frost damage as is and hope it seals itself or are you going to repair - and if so whats your method going to be? - I ask as i have seen a few frost damaged examples around and wondered what the options are for repairing those cracks - apart from metal stitching them or perhaps a heavy weld...
lovely looking engine by the way and a useful HP size.

I have been quoted some silly prices and I was wanting to know where to start as I don't want to be ripped off
I don't mind paying but I am trying to figure what is the going rate
I do have a full workshop for some of the bigger jobs but would like a petter M that is at least running to start with
thank you for your time and I have managed to glean a little more information

Sod Off! for now I will probably just chemical metal it, but one day I will strip it down and get it tig brazed at work, seems to work quite well

hahahaha - to comment would be unfair! - but the tig braizing is a seriously good repair - sadly I have no access to TIG unless I find a local garage but I like the style! - it gives me food for thought - thanks.
